I hope the politicians in this county step up and protect the people of this county by ensuring proper management of our jail. The first task of a jail is public safety. I ask our politicians "where is our safety? I just heard on NPR that they were using toothpaste to hide the fact they were cutting the ceiling. Are you kidding me? Doesn't anyone ever look around the cells? What kind of training are they getting? Who is the training officer anyway? What about the shift supervisors don't they ever take a look around? And what about our illustrious Superintendent, doesn't he keep his eye on the ball? How many of us taxpayers could endanger an entire community and stay employed? I think the county needs to make major adjustments working from the top down. If not the people will surely speak in the elections and they will start from the politicians down. This is truly a sad day for Sullivan County. I implore to leadership of this county to do it's job and make the necessary changes. I would also like the qualifications, educational, experiential, etc. to be made public so we can see what our money is buying and make no mistake about it, it is our money.

Where did Abused Taxpayer see that there were previous attempts? Did I miss it?

The only barrier between the prisoners and the unsecured portion of the jail is *drywall*? C'mon.

The Keene Sentinel article reporting this escape quoted the superintendent as saying other prisoners had attempted the same stunt in the past. If that's the case, why wasn't the jail prepared?

The construction project referenced is an expansion of the facility. It's more than a little scary to think that the same folks might be in charge of the larger operation. Commissioners have you heard the adage, "Past is prologue'?

And BTW, why not post a photo of the escaped inmate--that would certainly help the effort to find Hale.

I am amazed that Cunningham stated he knew of previous attempts to escape through the roof but yet never didn't do anything to secure it. We as taxpayers are paying in excess of $70,000 to someone who doesn't fix things he knows are broke and most likely doesn't even have a college education. I am not biased toward non-college educated people but for what the comissioners are paying him I am sure we can get a more qualified, educated manager. It is interesting that the Commissioners see him (after this incident) as the person to manage an expanded facility. I/we as taxpayers demand the Commisioners do the right thing and relieve him of his position and get the best money can buy for their constituents. If they are not willing to do that we will remove them at the polls.
