Police in Sanford, Maine, say a missing 2-year-old girl who was allegedly taken by her father was found in Milton on Tuesday and is OK.

Sanford Chief Thomas Connolly said the FBI helped find the girl through cell-phone technology.

Hailey Traynham was found with her father, 38-year-old Gary Traynham, who has been arrested and is due to appear in court this week. Traynham was reportedly hiding in the woods with his daughter when he was spotted by a hunter, who took them to a home, where they waited for police.

Maine State Police say he's being held in New Hampshire on a fugitive charge from Maine.

Connolly said he did not know who owned the Middleton Road house where the Traynhams were found.

According to the Associated Press, the hunter, Mike Grant Jr., 38, said he walked up to the truck in which Traynham had been hiding with Hailey since daylight broke on Tuesday. Grant said he never had to raise his firearm.

"He started crying right away," Grant said.

Grant said police helicopters had flown over the woods a couple of times, unaware of that Traynham was there, according to AP.

Traynham said he was nearly out of money and gas and had nowhere to go, Grant said. The father and daughter seemed fairly comfortable, Grant said.

"I told him to be a man about it," Grant said of his conversation with Traynham. "I can't let you leave."

Hailey disappeared after Traynham allegedly assaulted the girl's mother at her Sanford apartment.

Traynham faces a gross sexual assault charge in connection with that allegation. The girl was taken from her mother Monday about 11:15 a.m., according to authorities. Maine police issued an Amber Alert later that day.

Traynham fled in his green Dodge pickup truck, according to police in Sanford, which is in southern Maine.

After Maine activated its Amber Alert, the first since that state launched the program about six years ago, New Hampshire and Vermont followed suit.

New Hampshire, which officially launched its Amber Alert program in early 2003, first used it in 2005. The alert, created in 1996 in Texas, is named for 9-year-old Amber Hagerman. Its goal is to benefit from a partnership between law enforcement agencies, the media and transportation agencies.

Flashing road signs in New Hampshire alerted motorists to the case over the past 24 hours and, for the second time since the agency began working with police in such man hunts, the New Hampshire Lottery's most popular tickets carried the alert.

Material from the Associated Press was used in this report.

This is a positive story with a good outcome thanks to a level headed decent man. Is there anything you won’t whine about?

Mike Grant displayed humanity at its best. He could have easily pounced on the guy but chose a less confrontational approach which resulted in a peaceful ending. Mr. Grant should teach police officers how to use the approach he used. I sit back and imagine what it would have been like had a police officer come across this guy. It would have been guns drawn, lots of yelling and screaming, the little girl would have been petrified.
Mr. Grant's actions prove that treating people in a like manner gets positive results. Very inspiring!

Job well done Mr. Grant. It's hard to be a man when you’re told to search for your feminine side constantly. Wait until the younger generation today is older. They can't even keep score and learn about loosing and wining in sports or school.

I’m glad the child is safe and I hope the father and mother can come to terms with what ever it was that led to this situation for the little girls sake.

(Editor's note: Earlier versions of the story did not name the hunter).

I am very happy that Hailey was found safe and okay. The unnamed hunter deserves a lot of thanks.
