An apparent drive-by shooting early this morning sent bullets through the side of a Central Road home and into the walls of a bedroom where the homeowners were sleeping, according to police.

"They were pretty shaken up," said Police Chief Kevin Walsh of the owners of the 785 Central Road property, who he declined to identify. They are in their 50s and 60s, he said. "That's pretty traumatic for anyone."

When the incident was reported at 3:25 a.m., officers from Rye, Greenland, North Hampton and State Police converged on the home near Rye Beach.

Investigators recovered bullet casings on the ground. Walsh said there were "many" shots fired but did not wnat to say exactly how many because investigators are still collecting evidence at the scene and interviewing neighbors.

The homeowner and a neighbor told police they were awakened by multiple gunshots. No one was hurt.

The incident remains under investigation.

The Rye Police Department is asking anyone with any information to please call 603- 964-5522 or Portsmouth Crime Line at 431-1199.
