A drug deal gone bad allegedly resulted in a Vermont man being shot in the shoulder. A Derry man was arrested for shooting him.

The 26-year-old Concord, Vt., man, whose name police have not released, was shot about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday at 113 Rumford St., second floor. The wound is not life-threatening, they said.

Police arrested Daniel Gallien, 18, of Derry, in connection with the shooting, charging him with second degree assault, sale of a controlled drug, cocaine, reckless conduct and criminal threatening.

Lt. Keith Mitchell said the victim and two of his friends went to the Rumford Street apartment to buy cocaine. After one of the men -- not the shooting victim -- handed over the cash for the drugs, Mitchell said Gallien pulled out a .40 caliber, semi-automatic handgun.

The two men fought over the gun which went off, hitting the Vermont man in the shoulder. Mitchell said the round then went through an apartment wall and ended up lodged in an adjacent apartment building, where it was dug out by police.

The bullet casing and gun were also recovered. Mitchell would not say if investigators also found drugs inside the apartment.

He said the residents of the apartment, who he did not identify, knew both Gallien and the Vermont man and his friends.

Concord authorities were unaware of the shooting until they were called by Manchester police and told of a man being treated at the Elliot Hospital for a gunshot wound. The man told the officers he had been shot in Concord.

Gallien is being held in the Merrimack County jail pending his arraignment this morning in Concord District Court.

This incident remains under investigation and Mitchell said it is possible there will be additional charges and arrests.

NG... Yes he CAN be a good kid.. but he has been headed down a bad road for a long while with very little help from you... Yes it is tough to grow up the way he did (and you for that matter) Your mom was a great and strong woman and is missed dearly. Don’t disrespected her by using her passing as a crutch or to excuse all the wrong doing. Use it as motivation to be something good in her memory and for yourselves. Love you both.. I hope this is a wake up for you as well.

- Amanda, Derry,NH

When are people going to wake up? Arm yourself. The police cannot protect you 24/7.
And this is coming from a retired NH police officer.
- Bob, Boscawen

Wow.....this trash has moved from Lawerence and taken over Manchester. Now it's moving North again.
Watch out Concord !
- G. Paul, Concord

More Derry trash...This is a cesspool I live in. And so much of it teenagers and punks in their early 20's.
- Phil, Derry

Daniel is a kid with a great heart. You try growing up without a mother or father from the age of 13. I love you dan....be strong
- NG, Derry

This is the exact reason i moved to Manchester and OUT of Londonderry. One domestic fatal and one drug shooting this week. Crime isnt a isolated problem...it's nationwide.
- John M, Manchester, NH

Hey CDR:
Yeah, let's legalize it all.....And when someone who is strung out on recently legalized heroin runs your family over with their car....well, at least we saved money on the "failing War on Drugs", right?
- Mark, Bedford

Michelle, I'm saying that the War on Drugs has led to large amounts of violence and a diminishment of our Constitutional Rights in the EXACT same way that Prohibition did.

Prohibition created the Mafia and now the War on Drugs is creating gang violence. We're safer now that Prohibition is over and would be safer is the War on Drugs was over.

It's time to close the border with Vermont! New Hampshire is becoming Brattleboro East!
- Steve, Windham

To Jay in Manchester..."help these people" are you kidding me? The people who are committing these crimes and walking around our neighborhoods don't want our help. Do you think they walk around with 40 caliber, semiautomatic handguns for a cry for help? You are just foolish. They are beyond needing help. I know where this house in Concord is, and there are a lot of children who play outside in this area. What if one of those children had fallen victim to the stupid acts of these men? He should be locked up.

And, what are you saying CDR from Lebanon, legalize cocaine?? Get a clue!
- Michelle, Concord

Do you see this type of violence erupting from sales of Alcohol? No, because it's legal. Before Prohibition ended, there was tons of violence associated with alcohol. End the War on Drugs and you'll see a reduction in violence (and lower taxes because we wouldn't be wasting so much money fighting a losing battle).
- CDR, Lebanon

I think he should just apologize and move on! I'm sure he didn't mean it.
- Cliff, Amherst

Do the 3 guys trying to buy drugs get charged with anything?
- james, manchester

More violence over drugs...isn't it time we end the failed war on drugs and try to help these people rather than cage them and force them underground?

@Mike R, Bedford:

If we were hard on criminals they'd be off the streets and crime would be way down. Just as if people were able to take a stand to defend themselves more often crime would be down and we wouldn't need as many police.
- Jay, Manchester

Mike R, Bedford -- NH has no attempted murder statute.
- Claire, Hooksett

I dont know - he looks like a good guy. Do we have to put everyone in prison? Lets just give him another chance, as I'm sure it was just an accident that he shot a gun during a drug deal. We must forgive him and just chaulk it all to just a bad day.
- Jim, Concord

I think a negligent discharge in the commission of a crime ought to be charged as attempted murder. Why isn't it? Why are we so soft on criminals?
