He says running for the chairmanship of the N.H. Republican Party is "an insane idea,'' but he's been asked to do so.

MBrown from Kingston nice straw man you have there. The actual charge can't be disputed, so you simply ignore it and try to shift the focus. I cited Time, Slate, and CNN. Wiki only confirms what is already widely known.
I'd be happy to debate the relative merits of Wiki with you once you you deal with the matter at hand and acknowledge what no reputable news source has ever disputed: that Mr. Sununu forced to resigned in disgrace.
What a poor and transparent attempt to avoid the truth.
- Mike Lane, Manchester
Citing Wikipedia (to which I am one of the amateur contributors) doesn't alter the fact that the elder Sununu did leave the Administration on appearance-of-impropriety grounds. But if the lefties on this page want to come out and accuse him of being corrupt, they should do that and take the consequences, rather than occupy their familiar realm of ridicule and scorn. The more time lefties spend attacking the Party Chairman, the less time they will spend attacking the candidates. And the Party would do well to ignore suggestions on "moving forward" by people who don't have its best interests at heart (Kondracke, most recently).
But--"candidates who reaffirm Republican principles of efficient government and low taxes"? Not Judd mileage-mandates-and-amnesty Gregg. Not Jeb pork-and-favors Bradley. And not the captive of the hackerama that your son became in 2008.

Mike,
Citing Wikipedia is worthy of immediate discrediting regardless of the facts. Kind of like cherry-picking DJIA numbers to condemn economic policies.
- MBrown, Kingston, NH
John I notice you don't deny the allegations and instead disparage the source. Well Time magazine reported this as well. Last time I checked they were fairly credible. Also, the last time I checked I wasn't able to edit Time articles.
"John H. Sununu was a three-term governor of New Hampshire who served as George H.W. Bush's White House chief of staff for two years before he was forced to resign in disgrace amid charges that he misused government aircraft for personal trips."
That is a direct quote from an article in Time magazine entitled "Can Sununu Survive the Toxic GOP?" Published on November 3, 2008. This was also reported on Slate and CNN. It has never been in disputed that Sununu Sr. resigned in disgrace. As a matter of fact it was George W. Bush who first informed Sununu Sr. that he had become a political liability and needed to resign.
If Mr. Sununu does take over as Chairman of the State committee it will just be a signal to the voters of New Hampshire that the GOP Culture of Corruption will continue.

Walter,
You're referencing wikipedia for your dirt? You are aware that *anyone* can edit wiki's articles are you not? There's a very good reason professors don't allow students to use wiki as a source. I'm half tempted to edit that article just to show that anyone can alter/create "facts" to push their own agendas.

John H. from Franklin:
I'm curious on what exactly you're basing that supposition. Have you seen Sununu the Younger's voting record? Aside from one or two votes I didn't agree with (most notably the recent $700B bailout) he has consistently done what's best for the state, which to my understanding is the purpose of a Senator. He was one of the few workhorses in the Senate who actually read legislation and voted according to how it would best impact the state, rather than simply acting as a rubber stamp for some party.

I grew up in Derry and work at GE Aviation out in Cincinnati these days. At GE we have a saying: "don't confuse motion with progress." I might live in Ohio now but I still follow NH politics much more closely and it pains me to see the direction the state has gone in recent years. If preserving the character of my home means taking two steps backwards, I would call *that* progress.
- John Schreiner, Cincinnati, OH / Derry, NH
I think Republicans would prefer having a forward-thinking chairman who doesn't represent the past representing us. If the younger Sununu wants to run for governor, it will be a bit awkward having daddy as chairman, won't it? The Sununu clan better have a pow-wow and think this one through.
- Peter A., Candia
He is right about insane. It is an insane idea to get Sununu involved. He will put the final fork in the NH republican party. The the wrong guy to get the next generation interested in republican ideals. He record in NH was weak and he broke the law and public trust in Washington. Another proffessional windbag.
- Tom, Bedford
After the latest election debacle under the failed leadership of Fergus Cullen, the NH GOP is in dire need of a new CEO.
It is not clear if the elder Sununu is the best man for the job, but he would certainly be an improvement over Cullen and the RINOs.
The wisdom that Sununu has acquired through his age and experience would be an asset to the GOP, but it remains to be seen if he has the energy and new ideas that will be necessary to rebuild the Party.
The NH GOP is in need of a Reagan type leader, with a positive message, who can unite the Party and bring back the socially conservative Reagan Democrats. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nhrvc
- Kevin, Salem, NH
The template for Governor Sununu's role should be that of Walter Peterson.
This election showed me how tightly this man's grip is on state politics. He is shrewd and works behind the scenes, leaving no fingerprints. Lynch's strings are clearly pulled by him. He has no ambition towards national office for himself or any of his relatives. If only Meldrim Thomson were still around!
If Sununu provides nothing else but the wisdom of an elder statesman to counterweight Peterson and potentially sway influence in the Statehouse he will be providing an important, necessary function.
- Steve, Manch
Is this so important that it deserves to be on Page 1? No way. Aren't the budget cuts more important?
- Bill Siroty, Amherst
Don't you have to be a republican to lead the GOP? Sununu is anything but. He lost my trust, and if he represents the GOP, they'll never get another vote from me.
- Jonathan, Bedford
I think it's a great idea to have the elder Sununu back in politics here in NH. He has many years of experience and a unique perspective on where New Hampshire has been, where it is now and where it should be.
John from Franklin, what will you use as an excuse after George W. Bush leaves office? Or will you still keep trying to blame him for everything. A cow farts somewhere in Chile and people like you say it's Bush causing "global warming" through the cow.
Seriously, John. Get a grip on your Bush Derangement Syndrome.
- Jim, Wilton
I say let the Republicans select Daddy Sununu to lead their party. It will just reinforce the belief that the Republicans in NH and across the nation are out of touch. Going backwards instead of forward in to the future with new ideas. More of the same old stuff will not get them elected to any major office in NH. Judd Gregg may be next Republican to fall in 2010.
- Charley Austin, Manchester
Former Governor Sununu would make an excellent choice for Chair of the NH GOP. He has the experience and the scrappiness needed to get the party back on tract to win elections. I personally hope that he will make a run for the job. What is needed is someone like him who is not afraid to tackle the Democrats on their turf and beat them at their own game and not be a namby pamby.
- Richard L. Fortin, Manchester
Remember Air Sununu..? Well, according to Wikipedia, while serving as President George H W Bush's chief of staff, John H Sununu used government jets to take himself to fat-cat Republican fundraisers, ski lodges, golf resorts and even his Dentist in Boston.
So if the New Hampshire Republicans chose him for their chairman they probably should not be giving him any credit cards just to be sure that Air Sununu stays grounded.
- Walter, Meredih, NH
Both of the Sununu's need to get out of politics. They are so intertwined with the corruption of the Bush father and son tag team. Go away! We do not want or need any more of your lies, deception and corrupt politics.
- John Heinis, Franklin
Former Governor Sununu, you were a great leader and yes Republicans lost their way under the 'Corporate America' label. The new GOP will be stronger and will be once again the voice of the people which will reflect what those in New Hampshire have always cherished. Smaller government, low tax base, strong family values and strong defense of personal freedoms. In the upcoming local elections, it's time we elect those willing to serve us with leadership, responsibility and dedication to all they represent, not just to a special group or special interest. It has done no good and only keeps us divided not united. There is no party greater than the party of the people themselves.
