Hi, Alan.
The heat source is a Hallowell cold climate heat pump -- powered by electricity.
The Unity House at Unity College is a prototype for a line of Bensonwood's homes. The cost was roughly $200/sf for this first version, though cost will decrease with increased production.

Hi, Alan. Jesse Pyles here from Unity College.
The heat source is a Hallowell cold climate heat pump -- powered by electricity. The Unity House at Unity College cost roughly $200/sf. This construction is a prototype for Bensonwood's "Unity" line -- costs are coming down as production is appropriately scaled up.

This article doesn't specify whether there is a fuel source for heat. If there is a negative net use for the year, and electricity is the heat source (geothermal?), this is truly quite an accomplishment. I'd be interested to hear what the construction cost per square foot are compared to a more conventional setup.
