McCain: Seabrook 2 is worth another look; surge's success is clear to 'everybody' but Obama
By JOHN DISTASO
Senior Political Reporter
Tuesday, Jul. 22, 2008
While he hasn’t studied the specifics, John McCain today told UnionLeader.com that a generating station once planned for New Hampshire's Seacoast may fit into his plan for 45 additional nuclear power plants in the next two decades. To help hard-pressed consumers, he still advocates a "gas tax holiday," but could accept another economic stimulus plan if it did not increase the federal deficit.

Thankyou Senator McCain. Our only real choice for President. Nuclear energy is a great option and being a neighbor to Seabrook Station and interacting with its staff puts me at ease when considering a 2nd reactor. It is time we make some serious long term decisions about are energy plans and McCain is leading us in the right direction. I dont hear any good direction from the Dems???
- Arleigh, Seabrook
I still remember the fight when the initial cost of Seabrook skyrocketed from a couple of hundred million to several billion. The next fight was when PSNH brought it on line because that day all of our electric bills doubled. It is not cheap but it is an alternative form of electrical generation. The trouble is now with the way the electrical network is set up the cost of all of these new power plants will be passed onto the consumer even while the claim will be we have cheaper electricity. My new reformatted bill shows 2/3rds of my bill is in delivery charges and stranded wire charges. In 15 years that could easily be less than 10% would be my actual electric bill and the rest would be the buried charges for the private companies to be guaranteed a profit. Of course instead of a $40 to $70 dollar a month electric bill it will be a $200 a month bill.
- Don Armstrong, Henniker
I guess Mark in Derry is unaware of the two reactor leaks in France just this month! People are prohibited from using their wells, swimming in the rivers. Always great to see the inland people cheering for nuke plants on the Seacoast. Since we need to uprev the technology anyways how about we stick it over in Hillsboro county? Yeah, that's what I thought...
- John C, Newfields
Who would benefit from Seabrook 2 ? Ive heard that the power generated from the plant does not help the area,it goes down south True or not who benefits?
- Frank Beaudry, Salisbury,Ma
The only reason nuclear energy would be expensive is because of the ridiculous regulation heaped on the industry by the democrats during the Carter years.
Renewable energy (oxymoron) may be a bit cheaper though for now its not reliable nor could we depend on it for a majority of our energy needs. Billions have to be spent to build a grid to get the power from wind farms to load centers. And it cannot be dispatched as needed. A little power education here would be good for many of you.
If the liberal environmental tree huggers were serious about cleaning up the environment they would stop deceiving people on the dangers of nuclear power and support all we can build because it is the only way to get away from fossil fuels in a practical, reliable, clean, and safe way. Wake up people!
- Rusty White, AR
Cool beans! If we get another nuke, will we get a REAL evacuation plan this time?
Does McCain have any plans that aren't just failed, recycled ideas from the past?
- Susan Bruce, Jackson
NEVER will I be for Nuclear Fision - if you want to talk about Nuclear Fusion you have my attention.
- J. Keane, Manchester, NH
The man is a fool. I'm sure the residents of the sea coast will sleep well at night knowing that the Senator might study Seabrook some and determine its viability, whatever that means. We might do better flipping a coin.
And, he's so against spending money on anything that isn't accounted for in the budget. Except, of course, his 'gas tax holiday'. Where is that in the budget, Senator?
And, by the way, you people in NH don't deserve any increased fuel assistance this winter. It's not paid for, you see. Come to Arizona, it's warm there.
And, Seniors, screw you with your Medicare D. He doesn't give a damn if you paid the most obnoxious and unfair tax in history - FICA - all your life and Medicare D is a small payback for some of the trillions that have been stolen from you and spent on every harebrained welfare plan Congress comes up with. Medicare D was paid for in advance, Senator, by taxing working people and then 'repaying' them with an effective interest rate of 0.8%. another word for that is STEALING Senator.
Oh, sorry Senator, you don't know anything about economics, do you? And, you fire your economics adviser because he told the truth to the American people about something. Straight Talk again, Senator?
This is the best we can do against Obama? We're in deep yogurt. It's going to be a long four years.
- Leo, Canterbury
Not to rain on your parade but first off building another Nuclear plant will make our electric rates go up not down. Nuclear power is the most expensive way to produce energy in America. McCain has obviously not done a comparison of electricity costs nation wide.
If you want lower power rates renewable energy is the way to go, nationally wherever renewable energy is used power costs are much lower with the exception of California however they are well on their way. When Seabrook was built we were promised low cost power for generations and what we got was some of the highest rates in America. If you want to pay double or triple what you are paying now then by all means follow McCain he’ll do whatever the energy companies tell him to do.
As far as the surge, please if it went so well why is McCain saying we might be there for the next 100 years? Why are car bombs still killing people in droves including American soldiers? McCain only wants our soldiers there to protect the interests of the big American oil companies that just got the huge no bid contract to siphon Iraq’s oil. Nothing has improved over there for anyone but the contractors and the crooked politicians there and here.
The problem is that McCain and the Republicans don’t want to win they want to drag it out as long as possible to achieve maximum profit that’s how it was designed from day one. It was the same with the clean up after 9/11 and Katrina, everything was dragged out as long as possible and corporate profit in each case was protected and maximized at any cost both are still going on today. There’s a pattern here and following the Republicans for another four years will make things even worse than they are today for the average American.
Ahhh, for the days of 8 years ago when gas was 1.72 a gallon, the dollar was worth a dollar not 67 cents, we had a surplus of 500 billion not a deficit of 9.9 trillion, and wars were fought to be won instead of for maximizing profit.
- Jim, Raymond NH
The Surge has not been successful by any intelligent definition like, it's cost to it's benefit.
1. In the first place the troops in this unfinished surge should be either at home, or in Afghanistan, not in Iraq. To send more troops the wrong place just to amend Bush's quagmire just so he looks good in history books is NOT success.
2. We don't know exactly why violence is down, but decisions by local tribesmen, freshly bribed, have a lot to do with it. At any rate it now costs us billions of dollars and thousands of men to calm down a few thousand locals, that's not success. That's a victory for terrorists who want to bleed us dry.
Ok, one area of success of the surge: GOP public relations. The Bush administration and McCain have gotten away with calling out critics of the surge as, somehow "against the troops," which is nonsense. It's a wild cheap shot for political gain, and it works. Of course for chickenhawks like Bush & Cheney to conflate themselves with our soldiers is laughable.
- Markam Hadley, Bow
Westinghouse has been building reacotrs for decades and shipping them overseas. We do have the know-how to build safe reactors.
Since I've been paying for Seabrook2 on my electric bill does this mean I'll get a credit for subsidizing the investors for their loss?
- Ken, Merrimack
An excellent suggestion by our next President! That's a real step that would produce real electricity and provide a real reduction in our electric bills. This is opposed to the pointless puffery of the left including Obama and Shaheen and Shea-Porter and Hodes who offer nothing but punishment for the eeeeevil oil companies, wind power (which will NEVER meet the energy need) and a lot of yap-yap about conservation. Our Governor sits and says nothing. Why hasn't John Lynch been pushing to get Seabrook 2 rolling? No, all he can do is saddle us with yet more taxes with the foolish RGGI nonsense. Firing up a Seabrook 2 is an eminently sensible and reasonable idea. For all the scare tactics of the clamshell kooks, Seabrook 1 has operated without any problems whatsoever for many years. Get Seabrook 2 going and build a few more in other parts of the state. Get rid of RGGI and supply all of our own energy. Every state can do it. Of course, the nuclear plants won't operate our internal combustion engines so let's drill drill drill and get some new pipelines going as well. This is a REAL solution, not nice sounding nonsense from the likes of the Messiah and Shaheen.
- Mark, Amherst
Way to go Senator McCain!!!!!!
a proven leader who needs no on the job training...now lets get rid of Hodes and
shea-Porter too!!!
- Dan, Strafford,NH
Well, it's the most expensive energy to rate payers and the U.S. Government, which means the taxpayers. It's socialist to have the government subsidize power isn't it? Idiots.
- Tom, Dover-Foxcroft, Me.
I have been on the fence post about who to vote for. I was starting to lean towards McCain, and now I'm really starting to think that's the right decision. Outstanding topic. That takes some serious stones to bring that back up, especially in NH. It is long over due. Way to go Mr. McCain!!!
- John, Hooksett
Not to sound an alarm amid the glowing comments, but ...
One point that's ignored - the nuclear energy industry could not exist without the government subsidies it enjoys, including the use depleted uranium weaponry.
That weaponry has resulted in one of the greatest environmental disasters in history - the pollution of Iraq, Afghanistan and parts of Europe - funded by our tax dollars.
- tom, candia
Excellent!
This shows leadership. Thinking a little outside the box...and it makes eminent sense, too.
- Brent Anderson, Moultonborough
Holy crap, McCain just gave me a compelling reason to vote for him over Obama. 'Bout time.
- Marc, Nashua
As an Obama supporter i have to say i was very impressed with John McCain today. It is time to embrace nuclear power! i don't think you have my vote yet Mr. McCain, but you have done a great job showing a democrat what you stand for!
- James, Derry
This is the first thing McCain has said that I agree with. Time to embrace nuclear with renewed vigor.
- Matt, Derry
Case in point why Sen. McCain is better suited to be President. Sen. Obama would NEVER have the fortitude to make such a statement in New Hampshire. This is straight talk at its finest and is exactly what the American people need to hear from their elected leaders.
Oh and Sen. McCain is right too - Seabrook 2 is worth looking in to. Nuclear power has proven to safe and efficient and will bring new jobs the state.
- John, Manchester, NH
Yes! Heck, even make it one of the new thorium pebble bed reactors. They can't run away, they just shut down if there's no cooling.
And tell the Clamshell idiots, if the aging hippies are still around, to go pound sand this time.
- Jay Arnam, Portsmouth
Not only has France been operating safe nuclear plants for years, they also recycle the nuclear waste. It's re-solidified and reprocessed into new fuel. About 1% of it is eventually buried.
The Clamshell mentality in this country has stifled any development in nuclear energy with their expensive legal tactics. It's time to poke your heads out of the mud-flats and see what's been happening in the last 30 years.
- Marc, Derry
I work at Seabrook. Many have talked, for many years, about Unit 2 and the possibility of rebuilding it.
Using Unit 1, it's track record of success and the base of people that have worked here since the original constuction a second unit would be, in my opinion a very good idea.
The Nuclear work force is aging. There is only a fraction of the people left in the industry that are familiar with the construction (and bringing on line) of a Nuclear Power Plant.
The crew at Seabrook has maintained the highest of industry standards and I could not think of a better team of proffesionals I would want on hand to undertake a project like that than the FPL team at Seabrook Station.
Regardless of who enters the White House Energy is and will continue to be one of the most important and vital interests to this counrty and it's people.
Time for talking is over. It has been long over. It is time to act. Act with focus and determination.
