Wow, amazing comments here. In my mind a President is not merely an administrator or a politician, but someone who should inspire greatness in us all. Someone who could reach out to school children or adults and make them want to make a difference. That's what distinguishes a true leader. Why wouldn't we want our kids exposed to something like that?
- JC, Newfields

I happen to know that several of the teachers in SAU 15 were not asked if they wanted to show the speech, but were told not to. Very disappointing.
- A.J., Auburn

How about you let the kids listen to the speech then you talk to them about it during dinner.
OH I NO!. THE TV does all the talking during dinner. Don't you think your kids listen to ill speeches on TV everyday then a one time president speech.?
- jd, raymond

Every comment that is written here is political. The very reason we are writing on this page is due to our political stance on this matter. We all know what is at stake, a divide exists and neither side is listening to the other. In my humble opinion, until we can stop the petty sniping the divide will continue to grow. Both sides have something valid to add and neither side will get exactly what they want. You loose credibility in your argument when you take a pop-shot at the opposition and our children loose an opportunity to witness a true compromise.
- Tom Parnell, Hooksett, NH

Oh Gary Way from Bedford, when reagan did a speach on the same subject years ago, it was OK .I am soooo proud to be a Democrat and after reading all those comments here, even prouder.
- Laura, Bedford

I am tired of hearing how if you don't agree with the (current) President then it's a racial issue and has racial undertones. GET OVER IT. This country elected a black president because we don't care what color you are. All you liberal dems that bashed, threatened and hated Bush, were you racist against white people!

Look at the issues not the skin color, and quit hiding behind scapegoats. If Obama says something intelligent it isn't because he's black it's because the statement was intelligent, if he says something ridiculous it ISN'T because he's black either it's because he said something ridiculous!

The issue is our schools already stifle our childrens' individuality and original thoughts. Teachers should not be discussing their political agenda with our children. My 10yr old was upset this morning that he may have to listen to Obama in school today and take away from his school day. This is another attempt to target a new audience.

Interesting that he is addressing High School students about how they are the only ones that can make the best use of their school resources, when they are on their way out of the (public) school system. They are infact either 18 as Seniors or turning 18 after graduation and become new voters. Coincidence?

If this is truly to inspire kids to work hard in school and take every advantage of the resources provided to them then start at the middle school level or even tail end of Elementary when the kids are already bored with school and see no point. By high school most kids have their path laid out pretty well for them. Junior/Senior year is a little too late to realize you should have been working hard and using the resources given to you through the other 10-12 years you were in school.
School teachers were voicing their opinions Dem or Rep all throughout the election process, so your ignorant if you think there will be no political views or discussions before, during or after this so called speech.

The schools already overstep their bounds in regards to religion and politics amongst other things.

Keep the politics out of school. PERIOD!
- Shannon V, Manchester NH

To All,

Mr. Obama gave a great speech, plain and simple. I hope everyone sees its and listens carefully as there are points in hi speech we all should take to heart.
- Paul, Candia

Some folks here watch too much Fox and listen to too much Rush. Ridiculous charges against the President, racial undertones in some, complete disrespect for a President by those who complained about the treatment of Bush. Way overboard.

Pres. Reagan said the following to students:

PRESIDENT REAGAN: Well, thank you very much. Please, be seated. You know, this is a real treat for me, having you here, and to have in a little while the chance to answer some of your questions. Let me also offer a special hello to those of you who are watching on C-Span, or the Instructional Television Network. Thank you for inviting us into your home or your school today ...

And that is a vision that goes beyond economics and politics, it's also a moral vision, grounded in the reverence and faith of those who believe that with God's help, they could create a free and democratic nation ...

Because you see, the taxes can be such a penalty on people that there's no incentive for them to prosper and to earn more and so forth because they have to give so much to the government ...

There was talk about having a gun ban in California. It didn't go through. But I got a letter from a man in San Quentin Prison. And from the prison he wrote me the letter to tell me he was in there for burglary, he was a burglar. And he said, "I just want you to know that if that law goes through, here in San Quentin there will be celebrating throughout the day and night by all the burglars who are in prison."

That political enough for you? And, how shocking that kids would be asked to write to the President. Did you object when Bush 41 said:

In 1991, then-President Bush addressed school kids in a speech broadcast live to school classrooms nationwide. Among other things, he promoted his own administration's education policies. But before he wrapped up his remarks, H.W. Bush told students something else:

"Let me know how you're doing. Write me a letter -- and I'm serious about this one -- write me a letter about ways you can help us achieve our goals. I think you know the address."

Now what do you folks have to say for yourselves? Oh, wait, it's THIS president that is so "exotic" and "dangerous". Gee, do those hoods pinch your heads much?
- Nashuan, Nashua

Read the speech. If it were being given by a Republican president, the very same voices are rising against it would be applauding it. Conservatives? How about a bunch of hypocrites playing petty politics.
- Steve, Suncook

It is absolutely crazy the stuff that I hear coming out of people's mouths who oppose the president giving a speech about education to our schoolchildren.

What do you think the suggested lessons plan entail? Chanting his name? Making t-shirts with his name and forcing them to wear them everyday, eating Obama approved food? This reasoning, if you can call is that, is insane.

It's amazing how much aggression there is towards a man who has only been in office 9 months. I understand the public is frustrated with our war and economic times but did you forget what party was in control the last 8 years? How is all of this his fault?

How can you compare a man who is trying to come up with solutions to please everyone (which is impossible) in one of the worst situations of our history to a mass murderer like Hitler?

So sad, so very sad.
- Sue, Bedford

By law, every public school student in the state of New Hampshire must recite, or at least listen to, the Pledge of Allegiance. The Pledge asks that we honor (serve) our country. It also asks that we acknowledge god as a supreme being, whether or not one is a person of faith.

So if a President -- any President -- asks that school children do their best for (serve) their country, and that is seen as political propaganda, what are we doing to them when we insist that they listen to the Pledge...?
- Lisa, Amherst, NH

The idea that the president will not be telecast in every classroom, only goes to show how ignorant our society is becoming. The ignorance of course, comes from the teachings of the far right. They always have such a caring, loving attitude, regarding themselves. The doctrine of selfishness with which they are famous is ever apparent in their posts. They always are on the offensive when it comes to attacking the weak, the needy, and the sick. Yes, the far right is never there to help. To give anyone anything for free, is obscene to these people. There is no gray area to them, only black and white. They are creatures that have no mercy in their hearts. They are beings with very closed minds. Thank god they are not is charge.

George Bush did this years ago.. nearly verbatim what Obama is planning on doing. I am soo sick and tired of the divide that this country is in. Most of it is being spurred by the ideology that Democrats can do nothing right.. and doesnt matter what they do, we will organize and revolt.. We live in a society where you debate, negotiate and then decisions are voted on by the people who we put in there... if you dont like it fine.. but you have to work with it to be able to move forward as a country. The president of the united states should be able to speak to any damn person he wishes to help move this country forward.. children are the future of this country.. he has every right to speak to him. Just because he is a Democrat and you who speak against this endeavor do not like that is utterly shameful and I do not know how you sleep at night.. I for one am sick and tired of this rhetoric.. every one of you should be ashamed!
- Steve, Concord

Mark, Littleton

You are obviously just parroting whatever it is you were told to say by some Right Wing talking head. As usual void of independent thought or any critical thinking skills whatsoever.

You certainly do have the right to say no and yes you have the right to decide what your child sees and hears so if that’s your complaint then keep him or her home don’t shut voices out simply because you don’t agree.

There’s the problem with you lunatics, you claim ownership of what is and isn’t “American” yet when it comes right down to it you simply want to close out and shut up anyone or anything that doesn’t follow exactly what you were told to think or the opinions you were given. Shutting down free speech is about as un-American as it gets and you guys actually encourage it.

This is absolutely a case where a few complete lunatics are shutting down a historic event for no reason whatsoever, just because you can. There was and is no problem here other than the one you crazy people fabricated. This is nothing more than manufactured outrage.

You’re closer to the border you leave if you don’t want to see President Barrack Obama, he’s going to be around for another seven years get used to it.

You people can’t even comprehend the basic differenced between a Marxist Socialist and a Fascist Nazi you use both terms in the same sentence to describe one single person creating a paradoxical oxymoron.

You could use a wander down some school halls yourself and pay close attention to history but keep in mind the books work much better if you actually open them.

By the way Obama will not be talking about gay marriage or abortion he will be talking about education perhaps you should take a listen or are you afraid you might accidentally learn something?
- Jim, Raymond NH

Now that I’ve read his message, I believe it’s a mistake for the President to address the students in school. The message is not the issue. It’s the idea of a politician giving the message. He should stay out of the school system. People who don’t want their children to hear the address will have their children ostracized to places where all the opponents will congregate. By their action, the school is parsing the student body into a red and blue group. By offering parents a choice to have their children hear or not hear the message, the children become pawns in the ideology game being played by their parents. Do we prematurely solidify ideologies of future voters by painting them one color or the other at such an early age before they can speak for themselves?
- Gary Way, Bedford

WOW I just read the presidents talk to students. SCARY STUFF , wanting students to do there best and not give up, FRIGHTENING
- Rick, Manchester

Wow How SCARY the president wants my kids to stay in school and do there best FRIGHTENING STUFF
- Rick, Manchester

Jim, Raymond NH....

I would be interested in starting a cause/charity to pay for the whatever medication can heal your hypocrisy.

You liberals always cry that the conservatives are stuffing their ideals down your throat and "ruining it for the rest of us"...think about that for a minute...YOU liberals are the ones stuffing your ideals down OUR throat.

In this country, I have the right to say NO and not agree with your gay marriage, baby killing, anti-american views . I have the right to choose what I listen to and what I don't have to listen to. As in this case, I have the right to say what MY children listen to and what they don't listen to.

If you don't like it, move out. Because this is America my friend. And we have the freedom of choice. So before you ignorantly claim that other ideals are being jammed down your throat, it's a two way street. And that's the beauty of America.

I'd suggest you finish your high school education and get your diploma before even continue posting your views in public. I'm embarrassed for you.
- Mark, Littleton, NH

Wow PJ, it's disgusting that you'd compare the president of the US giving a speech to students to stay in school and work hard to the Nazis who were responsible for the death of millions of innocent people. Did you make the same ignorant claim when Reagan gave a similar speech that broadcast nationwide to students in 1988 or when GHW Bush did the same in 1991?
- jon, hooksett

I just read the text of Obama's speech and it is just fine. So game on! Hopefully there won't be any gotchas once it starts going. Nothing better that planted questions, OH NO HE DOESN'T DO THAT. Again trust is eraned not blindly given.
- Paul, Candia

The outrage is over 2 things:

1. The speech was sent with assignments with one being "how can we serve our president" He signed an oath to serve to us not the other way around. This has now been changed to "how can I best serve America". Akin to JFK's speech.

2. The WH sent this directly to school principles and ignored the proper process. None of the other presidents did this. It should have gone through the school boards first.

When Bush SR addressed school kids 18 years ago, (Sept 1991), it was heavily opposed by the Democrats. It caused quite a stir as he was addressing drug usage and the broadcast was costly during a time of struggle. The opt-out feature was also available to parents. At the time, I was unsure about letting my then 1st grader watch it. However, I allowed her to partake and used it for a topical discussion at home.

My concern is due to President Obama’s background and the folks who have mentored him in the past. Socialist, Communist, Marxist and Yes, even racist! This is why people are concerned. The video pledge to be a servant to Obama is the one that has stirred people up. The lesser educated on this speech say it sounds wonderful, stay in school, value education! Then at the end, your children are asked to pledge to Barack Obama. Sounds eerily like Hitler’s Youth Program. I encourage my children to pledge to the US flag, to Jesus Christ and to be the best person they can be.

Let’s not forget the now cancelled, due to embarrassing leaks, snitch email address the WH set up recently. In which the WH asked Obama supporters to email names of people who printed/blogged in opposition to anything Obama. This from the party that cried outrage when the Bush admin suggested taping phone calls after 9/11

I am an African American in the truest sense, since I was born and raised in an African nation. More importantly I am an American an INTENTIONAL American at that. So, please hold your thoughts when accusing me of racism! Not all blacks support Obama, the same way not all white’s supported Bush 41 and 43 or Clinton etc!

God Bless the USA for giving us all free speech, may it long continue!
- Annah, Austin, TX. Formerly Londonderry, NH.

If my two kids were still in public school (both now in college) I would keep them home rather than have them listen to this propaganda from a socialist such as Obama.
He is just trying to indoctrinate them into the far left view point at an impressionable age. Shame on him and shame on any school that allows him to interrupt the first week of school.
- LHemy, Plaistow

Perhaps some parents want to avoid having their children succumb to the "Cult of Personality" that got this guy elected in the first place. I mean he certainly wasn't elected based on his record or qualifications. I think all the looney lefties that think it is a racist or far-right plot need to look at the approval ratings for his agenda. Many, many independents that got this guy elected are back-tracking as fast as they can. We all had high expectations and this guy has dropped faster than any President in history. Camelot isn't happening folks, get over it. Of course when the left all badgered Bush for 8 years, they weren't mean spirited...only patriotic Americans! The loyal opposition to this guy are now liars, mobs, bullies and un-American. Can you lefties be any more hypocritical?

Last, I am a NH native; born here, have lived here and will probably die here. For those that have nothing good to say about NH or its citizens...go back to whatever zombie planet you came from and bring your warped, socialist ideas with you. You are a toxin to our way of life.
- Sam, Dover

Have you guys are watching to much fox news. Obama is telling study stay in school.

really people the only reason this is happening is we got to many gullible people.

for anyone who think its more than a speech or who thinks its not your president you are more than wrong.

You live in the usa he is your president vote for him dislike don't like him i don't care he is the President of the usa. Don't like it fine but you know he is stil lgoing to be your president. Just like bush was my past president
- critter, dover

This is our president and deserves respect as such. Black or white should not make a difference. I would sincerely hope that this address would be as described, but have been let down by many politicians from both sides of the fence in the past whether president or not. So it seems reasonable to me to tape the address and then work it into a class schedule at an appropriate future time. This also allows people to judge and opt out if they feel so inclined after gaining some real information not based on conjecture, which also seems prudent to me. After all are we not Americans and free to make up our own minds about such matters?????
- Deb, Merrimack, NH

I think it is pretty sad what this country has come to. Republiczn or Democrat, the people of this country have gone to far. I blame both party leaderships and there robot followers. People need to grow up! The stuff parents let there kids watch on tv and they are worried that the prsident of the US (I am not an Obama fan) is going to corrupt them. Give me a break..
- Jim, Manchester NH

This manufactured controversy further undermines the ability of leaders from any political party to govern the country effectively. It used to be that the sitting President was respected by all regardless of how an individual voted. The level of political discourse has devolved as a result and we are all a lot more ignorant as a result. I think the media is to blame for depicting the "Nazi" and "Socialist" cries of a few to derail meaningful dialogue for all. Count me in as another member of the GOP who feels that his party has been hijacked by idiots.
- Ken, Bedford

I do have a problem with letting Obama into our schools come on people wake up we cant let God into our schools why should we let obama? Donna Lambert - Merrimack

Obama isn't a God - he is the President of this country. It would do the children good to pay more attention to politics and watch less irrelevent movies at school.
- Deborah, Manchester

Well, its finally happened.
You guys have finally taken that long leap off the deep end so far off the deep end in fact that we have to squint to see the speck of you on the horizon.

The Superintendent said they received “dozens” of calls not hundreds or thousands but “dozens”. What that means is less than 100 in the district are forcing their lunatic ideals on the rest of us. It’s official, the lunatics are running the asylum.

It’s time to start calling it like it is, this is just a bunch of insane lemming followers of Rush, Palin, and Fox trying to screw everything up for the rest of us. If anyone would like to take up a collection to get these people the proper medication they desperately need I’m in.
- Jim, Raymond NH

Its the President .... why wouldn't we want our kids to watch that... think abut what you do allow them to watch on TV... this is the leader of our country...
what's happened to America..
- JB, Manchester

"I am thoroughly disgusted that the MAnchester School superintendent simply refers to the President of the United States of America as an "outside speaker". Would you prefer he call him something else, like "the tax and spend fraud from Washington, DC"?
- William, Portsmouth

This is the ultimate hypocrisy be democrats. They were screaming bloddy murder when Bush Sr. did this in 1991. Thet battle cry back then was "It is wrong to fill our childrens' heads with his speech." Now, they are saying its ok. Whar changed? Absolutely nothing, except democrats are showing how hypocritical they truly are.
- Jeff, Salem

Nancy from Dublin said "They are afraid that a black man will influence their children with ideas about the importance of learning and becoming good American citizens. Pretty scary stuff."

Oh, good grief! Will you people never stop that nonsense? I am black, my husband is native Brazilian, and our children are more black than that "black man."

We do not want any president holding our children captive in a classroom to watch a speech. And then perform extra work which is politically biased, when they are still getting review work from the middle of last year? Sorry, that doesn't work for us.

We do not trust our president, we did not trust our last president, but we will still watch the video before watching it again with our children and then discussing it as a family.

Our kids have always known the importance of doing their best in school, striving to beat their best, and the importance of staying in school. They do not need to have their precious school time wasted on this speech and "suggested" lesson plan. Not to mention, missing their lunch and recess time for it.

Had this video been released ahead of time so that we parents & teachers could see it, and were there no lesson plan attached to it, then I wouldn't have a problem with showing it in school if the children who wished to see it knowingly gave up their 20-minute recess time.

I applaud Mr. Brennan for doing the right thing here regarding district policy on "outside speakers." The governor's wife had to be vetted and permission slips sent to parents a couple weeks in advance of HER visit. This is no different.

People who think like Nancy are the ones fomenting the "scary stuff" among our kids.

Bev
- Bev, Manchester

Many people here JUST OVERREACT to everything. Will a 10-minute Presidential speech really indoctrinate a future generation? Isn't it a good thing when the President takes to the bully pulpit and talks about education?

But I can understand some administrators having problem with the logistics of the speech happening during lunchtime. I just wish people with chill and not display their ignorance by calling the President a "racist". You might not like his policies, but stop the name calling.
- David, Bedford

Jeffery Ballard - my thoughts EXACTLY. Who worried in 2001 about what the president might say? Another question - where would we be if the military showed such a level of disrespect if the ones who didn't vote for our president decided they couldn't trust him enough to respect his leadership? Could it be that our country is unraveling??
- Janet W, Bedford

some of you people are blind. You're so warped by Obamas BS that you are not seeing the big picture. Go do some research and you will see this is exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany. Sending cryptic messages to children in School. My child needs to be taught more about Academics not watch a video of Obama telling them what their parents tell them every day. My child will be pulled from the class if this video is showed to her. I as a tax paying citizen have the right to have a say, and I say no to Obama and his Nazi ways.
- PJ, Derry

Glad I live where I live. Not many radical hate mongers.
- tom marron, alstead

A question to everyone responding to this issue that HAS children:
Would you let a stranger speak to your children and attempt to instill his beliefs and values upon them?
- AF, Nashua

"Not showing this video live is just teaching students to be direspectful. Obama is our president, whether you voted for him or not everyone should be respectful."

Obama teaches children how to be disrespectful very well himself. Obama should receive the same respect he shows to others: none.

BTW - Obama is not 'my' president. I'd like to hear Obama explain how a racist communist like Van Jones lands a gig in his administration.
- Tom, Campton

Everything I have seen about the speech, including the optional teaching points, indicates that this speech is focused on encouraging students to do THEIR best

It is not the president's job or responsibility to do any of this, it is the parents job to encourage their child.

Also, I used to be a teacher and know full well that the 30 minute speech will end up wasitng a full day as each teacher - math and language will turn the day into discussion on the speech. Just the reason we are behind.
- CJ, Manchester

"Do you trust a president who surrounds himself with known criminals and self-admitted marxists?" I'm very surprised there is a censorship process to these comments and that was acceptable to let through. Yet I still believe in your freedom to write it and for the President, I repeat, President of the United States to make a statement to encourage kids to achieve goals and work hard in schools. It's not like he's telling your children the odds are overwhelming that your parents have one criminal friend thus making your mommy and daddy untrustworthy to hear anything from them.
- Clifford Verte, Manchester, NH

As A Lifelong Republican I can honestly I am ashamed of how petty the GOP has become. I remember a day when my party stood for things, and had unique ideas. What has the party become if this is what is driving them. I'll be back when the likes OF Rush, Beck, and Colture are no longer my parties leaders.
When we can once again approach issues with intelligence and fair mindedness. Till them I will not vote GOP!
Telling children to disregard the POTUS shows a complete lack of respect for the office and a man who has achieved the greatest accomplishment this country has to offer! No matter your political affiliation. The deep hatred needs to stop and we need to get back to intelligent debate of the issues. This communist ,Death panel.Hitler BS is doing nothing to help the GOP. IT makes us look like a bunch of braindead uneducated morons.Lincoln is spinning in his grave!
- Mike C, Londonderry

Any self-respecting parent worth their salt would intend and even watch the Obama speech with their kid. If not, then your losers and I feel bad for the kids with parents like these. I guess the parents of the Manchester schools would rather have their kids listen some jerk who still drinks like a fish and has bit of a cocaine issue, and had the country inbroiled in two wars, because in the end it will make him a richer, more selfish, greedy SOB. I guess that is what this country wishes for their kids. Everybody in the world knows that our education system is second rate, the parenting is second rate, and they are just waiting for the Titanic (USA) to sink. They will not have to wait long if a person has a problem with the president making a speech about staying in school and working hard, as opposed some dopey woman making a speech about god-knows-what the hell did she just say (Palin) and morons like Rush, Dobbs and Karl Rove. I like Obama, I like what he stands for and yes, I liked Ted Kennedy too. I want a leader who cares and actually works for us, not the citizen working for them. So, sue me!
- Gail Lynch, Manchester

Not showing this video live is just teaching students to be direspectful. Obama is our president, whether you voted for him or not everyone should be respectful.
- Jaime, Hancock, NH

Obama is a media whore there is no other reason in my opinion but just to get his face on tv. He will do anything to see himself on the evening news
- Fred, Allenstown

So you really think the president is going to brainwash your kids? Face the facts Republicans...you lost. Get over it and move on. Forget 2012, you may have to wait until 2016.
- ADM, Manchester

Reagan gave a similar speech in November of 88. It was carried by Cspan and shown in classrooms across the country. His theme was similar to Obamas; stay in school and work hard. Yup, real politicial and truly unprecedented.
- jon, hooksett

Thomas Brennan should take a lesson from the Salem School District and allow the teachers to show it if they wish. What is this Ditrict Policy anyway??!!!!! He should be ashamed of himself!
- amanda, manchester nh

A couple of posters asked what parent and school official are afraid of. Unfortunately, I know the answer. They are afraid that a black man will influence their children with ideas about the importance of learning and becoming good American citizens. Pretty scary stuff. If my children were in one of the districts banning the President's speech, I would keep them home and watch it with them.

I am sad that highly-paid radio and tv commentators are making people afraid of democracy in this country.
- Nancy, Dublin, NH

a president, any president, no matter what party, should not use a speech to children to push a political agenda.

the handouts from the white house given to teachers about this speech clearly have a political agenda.

if bush had doe this, the same people here that say "relax it's no big deal" would be crying about bush = hitler.

be careful what you allow ANY politician to do. because eventually the other side will hold that position and do exactly the same thing.
- allen, east hampstead,NH

The sad part is, parents let their kids get brainwashed on a daily basis and have nothing to say about it. A generation or two ago most kids aspired to be the next president. Now it's been replaced with aspirations to be the next Disney Channel sensation or fabricated pop star. Take a look on YouTube if you don't believe me. I wouldn't be surprised if you found your own daughter co-starring in a copycat version of iCarly produced at the last big sleepover. Now there's a future they can all bank on!

I think it's about time someone steps up and tries to give kids something to aspire to. Obviously they can't all be presidents but they can at least aim toward being educated, productive members of society with purpose. I voted for Obama but certainly don't agree with all of his politics, especially as they concern bringing further hardship to myself and my family. Still, he is in the unique position, as our President, to inspire each and every one of our kids, whether or not we agree with his politics. Why not let the kids decide what they think? I'm sure it won't change their lives, but perhaps they'll have something to think about.

Those of you who think your narrow-minded view of the world, in conjunction with a mind-numbing quantity of television and video games, is going to raise your children into well-rounded individuals have some soul searching to do.
- Ryan, Bedford NH

Another example of the witless, 2-digit IQ conservative bullies blocking access to points of view that may be at variance with their own. Wimpy admistrators dump a controversial issue into the laps of teachers, making sure the backlash hits the teachers and not them. Lets just start burning books we don't like and get it over with. Free access to information became extinct with the Bush administration.
- Beverly P., Langdon

Obama, is the first young Pres. since JFK who actually won the hearts, and minds of many of our younger generation. For the first time in over 20 years, the "kids" in their 20-30's were actually interested, and voted in an election.

Being that our school children today, will be dealing with the mistakes we made yesterday- wouldnt it be nice if those old enough to decide for themselves, could? How about dropping the big screen in the gym or cafe, and letting those attend who wish to hear what he has to say...? Novel thought I know- but our children are more in tune today to our world than EVER before.

Should the parents have a say- of course. I'll tell my children, if you are interested enough to want to watch- go for it.

Funny- rings similiar to what I believe we may hear Him tell our kids on Tuesday- GO FOR IT.

Lighten up folks. He won by a landslide. He should be able to address the children of our great nation. After all- he IS the leader of it.
- SRT, Manchester

I believe a lot of the negative comments stem from the fact that the Department of Education sent "suggested teaching plans" to all school districts. When previous presidents spoke, teaching plans weren't issued. Why were they issued this time? Why not just address the students and let the teachers handle the address in the classroom? Why should a sitting president issue a teaching plan? I think he should have made a video, sent it to schools and let each school make the decision on itself. He came on too strong.
- Kathy, Londonderry

What Obama is going to say is no different than what many progressive teachers teach kids everyday. So what is the issue?
- Kevin, Portsmouth, NH

Kudos to the school districts for letting parents decide.
- Jack, Concord

I'm not worried about the actual speech. What concerns me is what takes place after Obama is through talking. Most teachers are liberal democrats. After the speech, they have been asked to lead a discussion about what Obama said. This opens the door for all kinds of political talk on some very young children.

We will all get the chance to hear what Obama says. I'm more interested in hearing what is told to my children by their teachers. The activities and instruction administered by the teachers will have a much longer impact than a few words from Obama.

Grades K - 6 haven't had a chance to form their own political opinion yet.
This is nothing more than early training for future liberals.

This is indoctrination disguised as a pep talk.
- Mike, Nashua

Perhaps everyone who is in favor of letting the children of this State watch the speech consider the issue of trust. Do you trust a president who surrounds himself with known criminals and self-admitted marxists? I don't. That's why my child will not be attending school that day.
- John Lytle, Center Barnstead

I wonder if the liberals posting on this board would have supported an address by President Bush with a recommended lesson plan that included having the students write letters to themselves as to how they can help the President achieve his goals. Obama's original lesson plan included this and it was only changed after the uproar.
- David, Hampstead

For all of you saying you don't have a problem with the president making a speech to your children; How would your opinion be different if Bush were making the speech? The fact is that the president is a politician. There is enough biased politics in the school from liberal teachers. I don't feel we need to add another liberal voice to the mix.
- john r, manchester

As a highschool teacher, I am appalled at what society is doing to our future. Like him or not, he is our president, respect him and his decisions. I wish parents of these children spent as much time with their childrens education as The President is preparing his speech to motivate millions of children and young adults about learning and a FUTURE!
- ray, pelham

This president is unlike other presidents. He has his own agenda. It sticks out like a sore thumb. I would be fearful of his agenda regarding speaking to the children. He is a master of words, and his speech should be reviewed by parents/teachers before it is shown to children. We cannot afford to be relaxed and apathetic about the government now days, sadly. Our presidents have always been above reproach, at least in their ideals of our wonderful country. Why are so many Democrats suddenly unsure of the President they supported. ? We need to safeguard our children...sadly even here in this great United States ofAmerica. I love this country, my relatives have continuously fought to maintain our freedoms, our democracy, our greatness as a nation...wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the world. I pray we can keep our country running with the faith of our country's Fathers...founders of a free world. We need to be watchful...when the government becomes greater than the people, the people serve the government. When the government is as it should be, the government serves the people. Can we please look at that again? Thankyou.
- Barbie, Henniker, NH

Well Said Paul...to add, this couldn't possibly be a political decision now could it....HA.
- Brandon, Manchester

If the Presidents speech is to apologize for putting the American students in debt then I'm all for him speaking.
- Linda Collins, Derry Nh

I was in school when George Bush talked to us about No Child Left Behind which was a blatent political move. No one seemed to mind that?
In elementary school the first Bush and Clinton both spoke to us. They told us to stay in school and study hard, OH NO! It's nothing to get upset about and the parents making a big deal about this just need to chill. If a ten minute speech un-does all the values you have taught your children than you have done a pretty poor job rasing them.
Do the rest of us who are sane a favor and home school your kids so the rest of the parents don't have to deal with you.
- Chris, Hookestt

Funny thing is, if Dubya had done the same thing, many liberals would have complained and wanted to opt out their kids, and conservatives would have called them unpatriotic for wanting to opt out.

Just one more reason why it's getting exceedingly difficult to take American politics seriously.
- Tom, Keene, NH

Since my children will be deprived of this opportunity... Where can I have them go to see it, do I keep them home for the day?
Manchester Schools are scoring very low and they won't allow the President to encourage them that hard work and determination they can succeed by finishing school, and going on to college....

Let me know where my child can see this.....
- MM, MAnchester NH

I am deeply saddened....there is no reason why that the President to talk to our children. He should, are you kinding yourselves, we have an issue in our school system. I have no problem with my children to listen to the President, I would welcome it so they can have a connection with our President. Ask your child what they know about the President...other than his name of course. When is the last time you heard a child say they wanted to be the next President? It is far and few between...

I wonder if the President had white skin if it would be a problem? I bet NOT! Sadly there is still so much hate, and our communities are encouraging it more and more.
- HH, manchester nh

brainwashing and censorship? you people are funny. the one who will do the brainwashing will be obama. bet on it. you can't really belive that this "speech" will be apolitical. that is part of the dems agenda,to get more dems into the fold. there has to be a political word or two somewhere in his address, because he knows that adults wii watch too. $1 will get you $100 that it''s on the health care thing!!
- guy, manchester

Wow. All this controversy about telling our children to stay in school, get the education they are there for and that they may one day go out into the world and become hard working educated members of our society. Trying to dip that curve from a 30% drop out rate nationally by talking to our children. Oh the shame of our president for showing by example and by word that they too are important to the grand scheme of things. Whether people like it or NOT, he is OUR president. And if we dont show our children some respect for the authority of that role, how do we ever expect our children to then turn around and respect OUR authority. Remember. children learn by example.
- T.S., Dover

As much as I despise obama, I would encourage children to watch such an address if it were given to encourage their involvement in education. This is not. It is principally a partisan production intended to enlist children to pressure their parents into accepting obama's agenda, predicated on the cynical assessment that if rational adult Americans cannot be swayed by obama's fabrications, perhaps juvenile minds, more easily manipulated, can be recruited to act as auxiliary lobbyists within the home.

If this is "censorship" as some comments have charged, then our schools could do with far more of it, replacing the PC nonsense, leftist propaganda and interpretive "history" with facts and training in logic. This is only the latest example of how *indoctrination* is now the norm within what is disingenuously labeled "American public education."
- Tom, Dover

Obama is a once in a generation President. I can't understand how shortsighted these parents are, denying their children to share his wisdom.
- Tina, Derry

This is a sad day in America when people are tuning out a president that wants to encourage education. A sad day...I find it embarrassing to be an American right now. Any parent and school official who is telling staff and students not to listen to the president should be embarrassed. The amount of money that has come into school districts in the last few months through stimulus funds? Hello. Where did that money from from people? Not Bush, and no one tuned him out when he gave money to the car dealerships. Everyone stood by and let it happen.
- Mary, Manchester

It is entirely possible that the president's planned speech to the nation's school children is going to be a purely inspirational and non-political event.

However, because of the president's own words and deeds since being inaugurated, many Americans simply do not trust him any more.
- GUI, Manchester

Sorry Jerry -- our president and his racist policies (car companies taken from people and given to his friends for example) and admitted drug misconduct and the fact he belonged to a socialist party in 1996 does NOT make him a role model for our children!!!

The difference is Bush did not vow to create an 'civilian security force' where kids were asked to pledge their allegiance to him and become his personal gestapo.

This Obama is a very dangerous man.
Check out DoD directive NUMBER 1404.10

If the UL didn't do its homework, we people certainly have... and that is part of why we want our kids no where near this man.
Disgusting!
- Sue, Manchester

It is a sad day when people are afraid our President will brainwash our children. He is a role model for staying in staying in school and getting a good education. What hateful and spiteful people some of us have become for not wanting our children to be inspired by him.
- Linda, Raymond

I would not allow my kids at any age to hear an address by a racist communist who is a puppet of foreign bankers bent on the destruction and takeover of the country... Sorry.
- Sue, Manchester

I love that every district and school is different in NH. Thank goodness these superintendents are taking stands and not just mandating the speech. I love the NH way of doing things.
- Belinda, Peterborough

Frankly it does not make sense to disrupt a school day to discuss the value and necessity of staying in school and being educated.

The value of the information in the speech would have been just as valuable if it aired at 5 pm, 8 pm, or even on a Saturday afternoon.
- Jay, Hampton

Kevin in Merrimack is a classic example of the elitist "arts and croissants" crowd coming to NH and telling us how we are all just a bunch of stupid rednecks, pigeon-holing us as bitter right wingers, clinging to our guns and Bibles. especially the reference to keeping cars in ones yard. Such utter disrespect is truly remarkable.

Personally, I think showing the Obama speech would be just fine if the context and content were just what the Obama surrogates say it is going to be. Yet many people hold the view that President Obama says one thing and does another. It is therefore a valid concern and worthy of asking the question. School is for education, not the putting forth of one party or anothers political ideology.

Whether George Bush or Barack Obama, it is perfectly acceptable and right for our U.S. President to address America's school kids. But, not as a partisan-laden ideologue.

Kevin in Merrimack's comments demonstrate EXACTLY why parents and school officials are concerned over the fall out of allowing the President to address the student bodies. Kevin's disrespect and loathing of people with diffrering views is hardly a worthy example for school kids to follow...unless the course is "Political Polarization 101"
- Rick Olson, Manchester

I seenoproblem with a President talking to kids about theimportance of an education. I do see aproblem when the President sends out, oh God forbid, pre-detemined worksheets. I betcha there isno subliminal messages in them! I also think he is doing the right thing by pre-releasing the text, OH ON LABOR DAY! I wonder how many people will have enough time to read that? Sounds like another cap and trade and healthcare bill to me. Finally, why does it have to be right at the beginning of the school year? Couldn't he wait until everyone got settled into the school schedule? Remember it took him months before he got a dog. Breath slowly Mr. President the kids will still be young enough for you in a month or so!
- Paul, Candia

Unbelievable that we live in a country that is forbiding our children from "listening" to our president. Mike from Temple is a perfect example of what is wrong in our country. he only wants his beliefs put out there and none other.
Just FYI the teacher's in Manchester were not given the choice to listen in with their classes. This was done by the administration. School administrators were scared off by the hate mongerer's, like a few of the posters here.
- John, Manchester

I comment the Superintendents of Salem and Rochester on their attitudes. Everything I have seen about the speech, including the optional teaching points, indicates that this speech is focused on encouraging students to do THEIR best. If "staying in school and doing your best" is a form of indoctrination, then I guess there are some teachers that have something to answer for. Maybe we need to bring the McCarthy Hearings back.

I agree with Superintendent Hopkins when he said, "We believe that what (Obama is) going to talk about with students -- how important being in school is and working hard -- we think that's appropriate."

I am glad that I don't have children in the school districts that are refusing to provide access to this speech. Schools should be apolitical, and the people that run the district should be educated and intelligent enough to understand the difference between reality and the garbage coming out of talk-radio and Faux New.
- Tom, New Hampton

WOW! Should individual teachers and superintendants have the right to prohibit words of encouragement and productivity from our President from reaching the ears of our children? I think not! Let us revert back to times of patriotism and solidarity, and rid ourselves of derision and negativity.
- Barbara D, Jaffrey

What seems insane to me is that we actually have to have the President tell children to pay attention, stay in school, and learn things in order to be a productive member of society. Shouldn't parents already be doing that?

THIS is what is wrong with our country, some people seem to be more concerned with THEMSELVES instead of their children and their fellow citizens. This includes the lack of values parents are passing on to their children all the way to the jerks that tailgate and cut people off while driving, it is an attitude of selfishness and disrespect. There is a sense of entitlement without putting in the hard work necessary to achieve success. There is a serious lack of responsibility and accountability in this country.

-
- DF, Candia

The president wants to speak to the nation's children to encourage them to stay in school, and be active in their community? Oh NO, we must not let this happen!! Can we give the children some credit here? I mean do people seriously think that listening to the president for a few minutes in school is really going to be some sort of drastic life-altering event for them? Get real!
- Luke, Manchester

It's not Obama's "stay in school" message that bothers people. It's what some of the more radical leftist teachers will do with an opportunity to talk about Obama for the better part of a day. Lets not give the teachers union a extra opportunity to radicalize and liberalize the kids.
- Greg Salts, Manchester

Kevin in Merrimack, wow, just wow. "He won, get over it", leftists are still using that? And you just hate everything about New Hampshire, don't you. Yes, we "cling to our guns and religion." Does that scare you?

Are you a blow-in from Mass, one of the locusts who are trying to make it a failure like the place you escaped from?

Go home, Kevin. Live free or die means all the things you hate. This isn't your place, and don't you dare try to "change" it into one more liberal failure like MA, IL, NJ, MI, and CA.
- Mike R., Bedford

It's painfully obvious what is happening here. The majority of American citizens do not trust Obama and for good reason. In his own words, he is attempting to "transform" the country. He is a socialist at best and a communist at worst.
He has surrounded himself with extremists and the media brushes it off or simply does not report on it. Van Jones is a perfect example and he is forced to resign.
Bravo American citizens!
Van Jones wouldn't pass the security guard on a White House tour yet he is granted a "CZAR" position in the administration?
Why is Obama not filling Cabinet seats?
Why is he filling these seats with "Czar’s?"
I can only imagine the uproar had Bush circumvented the constitution and congress oversight with extremist "Czar’s"
I don’t want government in my Home, in my Dr's office, or in my Childs classroom.
And I don’t need him telling my kids to study and not drop out. That's my job and I do it well.
- Greg L, Hudson, NH

The Union Leader and most posters on here so far are missing the key piece of this. It is NOT so much the actual speech itself that moderates are objecting to (the speech itself has been well vetted to be staunchly apolitical).

It is the accompanying day of DOE lesson plans, with guided 'talking points' (e.g. 'serve your President' and 'serve your planet' etc) that was to allow significant undocumented biased conversational agendas on young children. Who could be against topic names like Clean Air or Clean Water? But the complexities of those issues economically and globally (Cap & Trade) are far more complex than a 3rd or 5th grader can grasp. If Mao & Hitler preferred this route, there must be a good reason to error towards objecting.

Hey Teacher, leave those kids alone.
- DerryParent, Derry, NH

I never knew that my life was destroyed when I watch President Eisenhower at his first inauguration speech to the US public on a television. I never knew that my life was destroyed when he gave speeches during the day and we all watched a TV in the class room especially since only about half the kids had a TV to begin with. I never knew my life was destroyed when school was delayed for a hour so all of us could watch the first live televised firing of an above ground nuclear test in the US. I never knew my life was destroyed when we watch the presidential debates and talked about it in school the next day. I never knew my life was destroyed when we watched the TV's in school during the Bay of Pigs invasion and the blockade of Cuba. I never knew that my life was destroyed when we heard and watched JFK in his inauguration and we all did a report on "Ask not what your country and do for you but what you can do for your country".

On the other hand maybe back then as kids we were allowed to think and form a decision based upon all that "we" saw and heard because that is how America got to where it "was" then.
- Don Armstrong, Henniker

It is embarassing to realize I live in a town with people like Helen Martin. What harm is going to befall children hearing a speech by THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES telling them the importance of staying in school and doing their best. Jeez, he might throw in respecting your elders is important too, even if they make no sense much of the time.
- Jane, Londonderry

What is the big deal? President Obama is the elected President of the United States and, regardless of political views, a good role model for the children of our diverse country. A lot better than those sport money and ego centric sports and pop stars out there. The President said it would simply be a message to stay in school and to get an education. I can remember similar speeches by President Clinton, President Bush Sr. (and Barbara), and President Regan. Why does everything have to be political? What are people afraid of?
- Will, Salem NH

Every parent has the right to keep their child from seeing or viewing anything they feel is not right.
I didn't let any of my kids view ANY prez's babblings and my kids are doing the same for their kids.
I can't believe there are people telling others to keep their kids home and view this with them. For what? Our kids are so far behind educationally compared to the world, why would you want your kid to miss school for someone's rant?
It's not that we are "afraid" of anything. The government has stuck their noses in our lives everywhere we go and I draw the line at it coming into schools. It is MY job to keep my child in school and it is MY job to teach them right for wrong- not anybody else.
I find it offensive that just because I have these views, I am heaped in with every nut job out there.
Let's face it, how many of these kids are really going listen anyway? Most will skip it, some will sleep or pass notes or play with their cell phones.
I think parents are angry because they have sign off on every other thing their kid does in school, but the government is allowed to just come in and make the kids view content that may not go along with the parents upbringing of their child.
We are all individuals here and just because someone chooses not to have their child see this, doesn't mean they are a wacko.
I applaud all parents who are refusing to let their kid hear this. It shows they are taking a part in their child's education and ultimately, their futures.
Stop bashing those who don't agree with you- it just shows your stupidity.
Remember- we are all supposed to be tolerant and one people! Haha.
This is not censorship- it is no different than you being opposed to having your child sat down and talked to about a subject you feel is inappropriate.
We should also consider that there are those who don't like the prez, and that is their perrogative. Would you care if someone that you don't like, talked to your child? I would. I wouldn't want them anywhere near my child.
I don't care who it is, governor, movie star, etc. it doesn't belong in the schools.
- Pauline, Franklin

This is the Democrats at their best. Listen to them all on this page. Obama is going to speak to all the little kiddies, and tell them to go home and tell mom and dad to vote for the health plan he is trying to impose on this country, just like the way they jammed the stimulus package up our, down our throats, without anyone getting a chance to read it, or even talk about it. I applaud the schools in NH. that have a little backbone, and say no to Obama at school!!!Haven't heard about the Keene schools yet though....
- Steve, Keene

I can only imagine that, after Tuesday, this speech will be on YouTube, the White House Web site, the Department of Education site, numerous news pages and blogs galore - accessible on television, on the Internet and at libraries across the country.

I'm guessing that any parent that wants their child to see the President's address can. I don't think there is any need to show this in schools.
- Ryan, Hooksett

I get the feeling that such controversy wouldn't exist if it were the lily-white GW who was going to be making a speech... The ignorance and that still exists in 2009 is astounding.
- Kate, Manchester

What this boils down to is parents are actually TEACHING their kids to be disrespectful of the President of the United States, this man is the top dog on the planet and he commands our respect.
But of course, they are raising the next generation of right-wing thugs.
- D. Roux, Bedford, NH

Every time my kids have a fire drill, lockdown drill, or someone writes something nasty in the bathroom, I'm advised of it. And yet, I have no knowlege of this speech being given except for what's on the news. There has been NO word from my school district. There is nothing on their web site. THAT is my concern, more than the actual speech. Shouldn't I know about this?
- Sara Jones, Nottingham NH

Kevin in Merrimack -- Yes Obama won the election. But he did so with a campaign based on lies and deception. His approval rating is falling like a rock now that his supporters realize just what he represents. He did a great job of using his oratory and reading skills to fool those voters who are easily blinded by emotion. To the rest of us who saw right through his smoke and mirrors show this guy represents the greatest danger this country has ever faced.
- Brian, Farmington

I suspect after all the publicity that the speech has been altered to remove political elements. I appreciate the President encouraging good education. What concerns me is the White House participation in the creation of lesson plans asking kids to think how they can "help the President" and to discuss "What the President wants us to do". If Obama wants to send a message to my child I think he should send it in a way that allows me as a parent to review and discuss that message with my child.
- Elizabeth Carr, Bedford

I think I should move to Salem. No dictatorship there!
- anonymous, Bedford, NH

I have a novel idea - how about having the president deliver his speech via cable TV and all the network affiliates after school hours. Let the parents and children watch on their own time and decide whether they want to be indoctrinated into the Democrat party themselves, instead of this thinly veiled sop to the teachers unions.

If George W. Bush ever attempted this charade he would've have been excoriated and impeached shortly thereafter.
- Jerry LaCo, Derry

Show me one kid who would actually "listen" to the President talk. Maybe if Obama put it in a video game or on Facebook he could hold their attention for more than 2 min. Who cares!
- Ryan, Londonderry

I am thoroughly disgusted that the MAnchester School superintendent simply refers to the President of the United States of America as an "outside speaker".
I am beginning to see how racist this country and this state really is. Any other President the schools would have no porblem. When is this country going to accept they have an african american president and just deal with it?

My god, every time President Obama takes a breath somebody is complaining he isn't breathing right.

Yes, i dared to used the word racism. The controersy over this speech amoounts to nothing less than racism in America and how racist people really still are.
- Jeff, Manchester

Good tune him out. I wouldn't want him talking to my kids.
- Paul, Milford

I can think of no other time when an inspiratonal speech by a president promoting the value of education would trigger such a reaction. I am left to wonder if some objecting to students being "indoctrinated" to Obama's point of view are really expressing code for a racist point of view.

Across every community in America most of share basic values and have no trouble engaging in conversations in which we can respectfully disagree.

I think it is time for those of us in the more moderate majority to reclaim our country from the extremists on both the left and the right who seek to dominate all discussion with misinformation and misdirection.
- Bill Huntley, Wolfeboro

Albert, it is not "censorship" that someone is not given a public platform and a megaphone with which to campaign, especially when parents object to Obama doing it in front of their six-year-olds--any more than it is rationing when an American who doesn't plan ahead doesn't receive the medical care he wants at a price that he prefers. Both terms refer to improper initiation of government coercion. We can't come to informed opinions on anything when debating questions based on deliberately imprecise use of English.

E.R., Obama won't appear on every channel anyway, as networs have recently measured how well it pays to decline to carry his speeches, certainly another one on a topic he has humped for a solid month without gaining traction.
- Spike, Brentwood NH

I do have a problem with letting Obama into our schools come on people wake up we cant let God into our schools why should we let obama? Lets do the same bring God back in and give the parents the option to notify the school if they do not want to be part. Fair is fair God is much more important and been in the school system for all those years it makes sense. Better wake up before its way too late!!
- Donna lambert, Merrimack NH

A tempest in a teapot. Nobody knows
at this point what the President will
say. To make judgements based on
ones own political leanings is nothing
more than censorship. Listen to what
the man has to say. Explore the ideas
with as little prejudice as possible,
THEN decide whether to believe or not.
Didn't we have enough of the hate and
accuse attitude in the '50s, with Joe
McCarthy? We gave Bush two terms.
Let's at least allow Obama a start.
- Bob Reinhard, Epsom, NH

I am deeply saddened to see how inane the national dialogue has become. I have been inspired by presidents from both parties my entire life. This president wishes to inspire children to stay in school but through the most bizarre twisting of reason, he is excoriated for attempting to brainwash our children. There is worry from school administrators that the address will not have sufficient educational value to merit the time lost in the classroom. Such a poor excuse. There may be many children who change their attitude about learning for the better as a direct result of this speech, but we can't take that chance. No, better to stick to the lesson plan and play it safe.
- Paul, Weare, NH

Typical NH nonesense. Of course most of the posts on this story are warped. I have never seen such foolish ideas being put forth, than by the far right of NH. President Obama WON! Get it! Sour grapes from the right wingers. If you knew what you were talking about, or had a good brain in your head, things might be differant. Guns, God, and the freedom to keep a bunch of old cars in the yard, is what they are interested in up here. I'm NRA and I vote. That is the bumper sticker that exemplifies these people. Then the comparisons of our president, to communist leaders. That is the meat of their argument. What we have here, is a large group of people who have already been brainwashed by the conservative media. All the kids should be able to watch our president without the controversy the far right has drummed up.
- kevin, merrimack

I encourage the parents of Manchester who want their children to hear the speech to keep their children home, listen to the speech with them and be there to talk with them about the content.
It is also a good opportunity to discuss the censorship of information in the public schools, regardless of your own families personal beliefs. High School students are old enough to learn that history and science is taught differently depending on which part of the country you are educated in. Some places call the civil war the war of northern aggression. Some schools do not teach evolution but they do teach creationism. Teach your children to think for themselves as adults, to hear all sides and decide for themselves what is best for them!
- Catherine, Manchester

Hey Jeffery, you were right when you said "Were parents up in arms the morning of September 11th, 2001 when President Bush was reading to school children?" The only problem with your thinking is President Bush was READING a book to one class and not GIVING a speech to the whole country. Big difference.
- DJ, Goffstown nh

All this controversy about this speech being too dangerous for children, is certainly going to make more kids want to see it.

Perhaps, they should all play hookie, find a place to watch the speech, and have an adult-free conversation about the insanity of politics.
- Thad, Dalton

Censorship, plain and simple.
In Manchester it is stated by Sup. Brennan "President's speech is being handled under a district policy on outside speakers in the classroom, which allows individual school principals to determine whether the presentation has educational value. Notice is sent to all parents, and if some do not want to have their children participate, the school has to provide a "meaningful alternative."
What notice was sent I have children in two dif schools and no notice.
Also the teacher determine if such a speech is educational or not. I believe it lets teachers or admin for that reason put forth thier own views.
As stated by many opinions let the President speak. What is everyone afraid of.
- Robert, Manchester

It looks like Heir Rush and his like win another one, its a sad day in America when the elected President can be accused of some Svengali like ability to control the children through a speech really designed to encourage them to strive for an education.
Its obvious the talking heads , who have no alternatives to our nations problems just false propaganda, really control some of the peoples minds.
I remember watching Presidents speechs in school on TV's, and wasn't Bush addressing school children when he got the call about 911?
This whole idea is nuts, and anti American.

Federal law expressly forbids the Secretary of Education or any officer from exercising "any direction, supervision, or control over the curriculum, program of instruction, administration, or personnel of any educational institution, school, or school system." 20 U.S.C. § 3403
- Geoff, Center Barnstead

The UL needs to do a MUCH better job reporting the "Whys" of the opposition. If this were a simple "do well in school and work hard" speech, there would not be such an uprising and controversy. However it is not. What the Obama Regime is doing is not related to academic instruction. The speech and the subsequent "assignment" are designed to elicit information about attitudes, habits, traits, opinions, beliefs, or feelings. It's anti-American, Unconstitutional, and seeing as how it violates the Code of Federal Regulations Section 98.4[c] [1] and [2], it's illegal. This anti-President is using plays from his mentor, friend and financial supporter Bill Ayers to bring about the types of change in America that the majority of Americans (save the socialist moonbats - some of whom obviously post here) will not come to appreciate...ensuring that our children live under the yoke of socialism which generations before us fought and died to protect us against. He has already ensured the financial slavery of the next two generations. I suppose now it makes sense for him to capture their minds as well. Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Hitler, Chavez, Castro, Obama. All pathetic human beings, all cut from the same rotten cloth. The reason socialism is symbolized with the color red is because it's the same color as the blood of the people who live under its yoke. Barry, you are not - nor shall you ever be - my king. I praise God for the fact that more and more people are waking up to what's going on.
- Mike, Temple

Part of your story states that some critics of the President view the speech as an attempt to "indoctrinate" students to Obama's views. Aren't those same critics (parents and teachers) attempting to "indoctrinate" students to their views? Ain't censorship grand? Maybe instead of town hall meetings we can go back to book burnings.
- Doug, Gilford

I don't have a problem with high schoolers watching/listening to the speech. Even freshmen are only three years away from being registered voters. Not to mention that this would be a good subject to debate in Civics or something of the sort. But why exactly is it that my third grader has to listen to this? Whether I voted for him or not I just have to wonder what kind of educational value this speech will hold for my child. What kind of message is this sending I wonder.

Reading the various statements by school OFFICIALS, it appears that many are "chickening" out of making a decision.
To place the option on the classroom teachers is not what teachers are paid to do.
If controversy results, I can hear the bosses now: WE DIDN'T MAKE THAT DECISION TO HEAR OR NOT HEAR THE SPEECH, THEY DID ( the teachers)!

And it is obvious which of the officials are POLITICAL. Mr Buckley. et al???

If the speech is that important, it will appear ad nausem on every TV channel, where the entire family can hear it together.
Schools are NOT paid for by our taxes to to the arenas of politicians! Although, let's face it, a huge %% of educators are left leaning which is another reason to skip this issue and go on to something essential.

A FORMER teacher

What a bunch of hoopla over nothing. Its our own president speaking to us and our kids. People are acting like its the president of N. Korea that wants to talk to our kids. What are you all so afraid of?
- Scott Van Gelder, Bethlehem

God forbid that our President would encourage our children to hit the book and stay in school with the promise that their hard work will pay off with being a well-educated, productive member of society. Most of the people freaking out about the "subliminal" messages in the speech are the same parents who allow their children to go home and watch WWF and Total Drama Island.
Do we not have enough in our day to day life to worry about without having to waste time and engergy hyperbolizing about a pro-education speech?
- Liz, Milan

Ms Diana in Salem, you could say the same the same thing about religion, Brainwashing the young, and parents have a say. I don't see a difference.
Whatever happened to separation of church and state and that means religious holidays too.
- Ellie, Manchester

Interesting issue in this action, the Question is ---Very simple -Censorship or not? I must admit I do like to read other opinionss then mine that cforce me to evaluate my views , modify, change or maintain the views as needed. It is a sign of respect and consideration to read or listen to others views. Screaming matches like I have heard of this summer are a diservice to our nation.

In Wakefiled the Paul school is not planning on allowing children the chance to see the President to speak to them about the value of their education.

I would encourage all of the parents in the district who wish to have their child participate to send their children to school on Tuesday with notes that they wish for their child to be involved.

We live in the "Live Free or Die" State, therefor the parents should be deciding, not administrators who are being pushed based on scare tactics.

Were parents up in arms the morning of September 11th, 2001 when President Bush was reading to school children?

The only people playing politics are those on the right who want to scare us.

Our President is a role model whether you argee with his politics or not, he rose from nothing to being the most powerful man on earth, if he gets one child to take their education seriously and to know their only limits are the ones they place on themselves than it would all be worth while!
