Look at the issues not the skin color, and quit hiding behind scapegoats. If Obama says something intelligent it isn't because he's black it's because the statement was intelligent, if he says something ridiculous it ISN'T because he's black either it's because he said something ridiculous!
The issue is our schools already stifle our childrens' individuality and original thoughts. Teachers should not be discussing their political agenda with our children. My 10yr old was upset this morning that he may have to listen to Obama in school today and take away from his school day. This is another attempt to target a new audience.
Interesting that he is addressing High School students about how they are the only ones that can make the best use of their school resources, when they are on their way out of the (public) school system. They are infact either 18 as Seniors or turning 18 after graduation and become new voters. Coincidence?
If this is truly to inspire kids to work hard in school and take every advantage of the resources provided to them then start at the middle school level or even tail end of Elementary when the kids are already bored with school and see no point. By high school most kids have their path laid out pretty well for them. Junior/Senior year is a little too late to realize you should have been working hard and using the resources given to you through the other 10-12 years you were in school.
School teachers were voicing their opinions Dem or Rep all throughout the election process, so your ignorant if you think there will be no political views or discussions before, during or after this so called speech.
The schools already overstep their bounds in regards to religion and politics amongst other things.
Keep the politics out of school. PERIOD!
- Shannon V, Manchester NH
Mr. Obama gave a great speech, plain and simple. I hope everyone sees its and listens carefully as there are points in hi speech we all should take to heart.

Pres. Reagan said the following to students:
PRESIDENT REAGAN: Well, thank you very much. Please, be seated. You know, this is a real treat for me, having you here, and to have in a little while the chance to answer some of your questions. Let me also offer a special hello to those of you who are watching on C-Span, or the Instructional Television Network. Thank you for inviting us into your home or your school today ...
And that is a vision that goes beyond economics and politics, it's also a moral vision, grounded in the reverence and faith of those who believe that with God's help, they could create a free and democratic nation ...
Because you see, the taxes can be such a penalty on people that there's no incentive for them to prosper and to earn more and so forth because they have to give so much to the government ...
There was talk about having a gun ban in California. It didn't go through. But I got a letter from a man in San Quentin Prison. And from the prison he wrote me the letter to tell me he was in there for burglary, he was a burglar. And he said, "I just want you to know that if that law goes through, here in San Quentin there will be celebrating throughout the day and night by all the burglars who are in prison."
That political enough for you? And, how shocking that kids would be asked to write to the President. Did you object when Bush 41 said:
In 1991, then-President Bush addressed school kids in a speech broadcast live to school classrooms nationwide. Among other things, he promoted his own administration's education policies. But before he wrapped up his remarks, H.W. Bush told students something else:
"Let me know how you're doing. Write me a letter -- and I'm serious about this one -- write me a letter about ways you can help us achieve our goals. I think you know the address."
Now what do you folks have to say for yourselves? Oh, wait, it's THIS president that is so "exotic" and "dangerous". Gee, do those hoods pinch your heads much?
- Nashuan, Nashua
- Steve, Suncook
What do you think the suggested lessons plan entail? Chanting his name? Making t-shirts with his name and forcing them to wear them everyday, eating Obama approved food? This reasoning, if you can call is that, is insane.
It's amazing how much aggression there is towards a man who has only been in office 9 months. I understand the public is frustrated with our war and economic times but did you forget what party was in control the last 8 years? How is all of this his fault?
How can you compare a man who is trying to come up with solutions to please everyone (which is impossible) in one of the worst situations of our history to a mass murderer like Hitler?
So sad, so very sad.
- Sue, Bedford
So if a President -- any President -- asks that school children do their best for (serve) their country, and that is seen as political propaganda, what are we doing to them when we insist that they listen to the Pledge...?

You are obviously just parroting whatever it is you were told to say by some Right Wing talking head. As usual void of independent thought or any critical thinking skills whatsoever.
You certainly do have the right to say no and yes you have the right to decide what your child sees and hears so if that’s your complaint then keep him or her home don’t shut voices out simply because you don’t agree.
There’s the problem with you lunatics, you claim ownership of what is and isn’t “American” yet when it comes right down to it you simply want to close out and shut up anyone or anything that doesn’t follow exactly what you were told to think or the opinions you were given. Shutting down free speech is about as un-American as it gets and you guys actually encourage it.
This is absolutely a case where a few complete lunatics are shutting down a historic event for no reason whatsoever, just because you can. There was and is no problem here other than the one you crazy people fabricated. This is nothing more than manufactured outrage.
You’re closer to the border you leave if you don’t want to see President Barrack Obama, he’s going to be around for another seven years get used to it.
You people can’t even comprehend the basic differenced between a Marxist Socialist and a Fascist Nazi you use both terms in the same sentence to describe one single person creating a paradoxical oxymoron.
You could use a wander down some school halls yourself and pay close attention to history but keep in mind the books work much better if you actually open them.
By the way Obama will not be talking about gay marriage or abortion he will be talking about education perhaps you should take a listen or are you afraid you might accidentally learn something?

I would be interested in starting a cause/charity to pay for the whatever medication can heal your hypocrisy.
You liberals always cry that the conservatives are stuffing their ideals down your throat and "ruining it for the rest of us"...think about that for a minute...YOU liberals are the ones stuffing your ideals down OUR throat.
In this country, I have the right to say NO and not agree with your gay marriage, baby killing, anti-american views . I have the right to choose what I listen to and what I don't have to listen to. As in this case, I have the right to say what MY children listen to and what they don't listen to.
If you don't like it, move out. Because this is America my friend. And we have the freedom of choice. So before you ignorantly claim that other ideals are being jammed down your throat, it's a two way street. And that's the beauty of America.
I'd suggest you finish your high school education and get your diploma before even continue posting your views in public. I'm embarrassed for you.

1. The speech was sent with assignments with one being "how can we serve our president" He signed an oath to serve to us not the other way around. This has now been changed to "how can I best serve America". Akin to JFK's speech.
2. The WH sent this directly to school principles and ignored the proper process. None of the other presidents did this. It should have gone through the school boards first.
When Bush SR addressed school kids 18 years ago, (Sept 1991), it was heavily opposed by the Democrats. It caused quite a stir as he was addressing drug usage and the broadcast was costly during a time of struggle. The opt-out feature was also available to parents. At the time, I was unsure about letting my then 1st grader watch it. However, I allowed her to partake and used it for a topical discussion at home.
My concern is due to President Obama’s background and the folks who have mentored him in the past. Socialist, Communist, Marxist and Yes, even racist! This is why people are concerned. The video pledge to be a servant to Obama is the one that has stirred people up. The lesser educated on this speech say it sounds wonderful, stay in school, value education! Then at the end, your children are asked to pledge to Barack Obama. Sounds eerily like Hitler’s Youth Program. I encourage my children to pledge to the US flag, to Jesus Christ and to be the best person they can be.
Let’s not forget the now cancelled, due to embarrassing leaks, snitch email address the WH set up recently. In which the WH asked Obama supporters to email names of people who printed/blogged in opposition to anything Obama. This from the party that cried outrage when the Bush admin suggested taping phone calls after 9/11
I am an African American in the truest sense, since I was born and raised in an African nation. More importantly I am an American an INTENTIONAL American at that. So, please hold your thoughts when accusing me of racism! Not all blacks support Obama, the same way not all white’s supported Bush 41 and 43 or Clinton etc!
God Bless the USA for giving us all free speech, may it long continue!
- Annah, Austin, TX. Formerly Londonderry, NH.
He is just trying to indoctrinate them into the far left view point at an impressionable age. Shame on him and shame on any school that allows him to interrupt the first week of school.

Last, I am a NH native; born here, have lived here and will probably die here. For those that have nothing good to say about NH or its citizens...go back to whatever zombie planet you came from and bring your warped, socialist ideas with you. You are a toxin to our way of life.

really people the only reason this is happening is we got to many gullible people.
for anyone who think its more than a speech or who thinks its not your president you are more than wrong.
You live in the usa he is your president vote for him dislike don't like him i don't care he is the President of the usa. Don't like it fine but you know he is stil lgoing to be your president. Just like bush was my past president

Obama isn't a God - he is the President of this country. It would do the children good to pay more attention to politics and watch less irrelevent movies at school.
- Deborah, Manchester
You guys have finally taken that long leap off the deep end so far off the deep end in fact that we have to squint to see the speck of you on the horizon.
The Superintendent said they received “dozens” of calls not hundreds or thousands but “dozens”. What that means is less than 100 in the district are forcing their lunatic ideals on the rest of us. It’s official, the lunatics are running the asylum.
It’s time to start calling it like it is, this is just a bunch of insane lemming followers of Rush, Palin, and Fox trying to screw everything up for the rest of us. If anyone would like to take up a collection to get these people the proper medication they desperately need I’m in.

Oh, good grief! Will you people never stop that nonsense? I am black, my husband is native Brazilian, and our children are more black than that "black man."
We do not want any president holding our children captive in a classroom to watch a speech. And then perform extra work which is politically biased, when they are still getting review work from the middle of last year? Sorry, that doesn't work for us.
We do not trust our president, we did not trust our last president, but we will still watch the video before watching it again with our children and then discussing it as a family.
Our kids have always known the importance of doing their best in school, striving to beat their best, and the importance of staying in school. They do not need to have their precious school time wasted on this speech and "suggested" lesson plan. Not to mention, missing their lunch and recess time for it.
Had this video been released ahead of time so that we parents & teachers could see it, and were there no lesson plan attached to it, then I wouldn't have a problem with showing it in school if the children who wished to see it knowingly gave up their 20-minute recess time.
I applaud Mr. Brennan for doing the right thing here regarding district policy on "outside speakers." The governor's wife had to be vetted and permission slips sent to parents a couple weeks in advance of HER visit. This is no different.
People who think like Nancy are the ones fomenting the "scary stuff" among our kids.
Bev

Obama teaches children how to be disrespectful very well himself. Obama should receive the same respect he shows to others: none.
BTW - Obama is not 'my' president. I'd like to hear Obama explain how a racist communist like Van Jones lands a gig in his administration.
- Tom, Campton
It is not the president's job or responsibility to do any of this, it is the parents job to encourage their child.
Also, I used to be a teacher and know full well that the 30 minute speech will end up wasitng a full day as each teacher - math and language will turn the day into discussion on the speech. Just the reason we are behind.

When we can once again approach issues with intelligence and fair mindedness. Till them I will not vote GOP!
Telling children to disregard the POTUS shows a complete lack of respect for the office and a man who has achieved the greatest accomplishment this country has to offer! No matter your political affiliation. The deep hatred needs to stop and we need to get back to intelligent debate of the issues. the handouts from the white house given to teachers about this speech clearly have a political agenda.
if bush had doe this, the same people here that say "relax it's no big deal" would be crying about bush = hitler.
be careful what you allow ANY politician to do. because eventually the other side will hold that position and do exactly the same thing.

I think it's about time someone steps up and tries to give kids something to aspire to. Obviously they can't all be presidents but they can at least aim toward being educated, productive members of society with purpose. I voted for Obama but certainly don't agree with all of his politics, especially as they concern bringing further hardship to myself and my family. Still, he is in the unique position, as our President, to inspire each and every one of our kids, whether or not we agree with his politics. Why not let the kids decide what they think? I'm sure it won't change their lives, but perhaps they'll have something to think about.
Those of you who think your narrow-minded view of the world, in conjunction with a mind-numbing quantity of television and video games, is going to raise your children into well-rounded individuals have some soul searching to do.
- Ryan, Bedford NH
- Beverly P., Langdon
Being that our school children today, will be dealing with the mistakes we made yesterday- wouldnt it be nice if those old enough to decide for themselves, could? How about dropping the big screen in the gym or cafe, and letting those attend who wish to hear what he has to say...? Novel thought I know- but our children are more in tune today to our world than EVER before.
Should the parents have a say- of course. I'll tell my children, if you are interested enough to want to watch- go for it.
Funny- rings similiar to what I believe we may hear Him tell our kids on Tuesday- GO FOR IT.
Lighten up folks. He won by a landslide. He should be able to address the children of our great nation. After all- he IS the leader of it.

We will all get the chance to hear what Obama says. I'm more interested in hearing what is told to my children by their teachers. The activities and instruction administered by the teachers will have a much longer impact than a few words from Obama.

In elementary school the first Bush and Clinton both spoke to us. They told us to stay in school and study hard, OH NO! It's nothing to get upset about and the parents making a big deal about this just need to chill. If a ten minute speech un-does all the values you have taught your children than you have done a pretty poor job rasing them.
Do the rest of us who are sane a favor and home school your kids so the rest of the parents don't have to deal with you.

If this is "censorship" as some comments have charged, then our schools could do with far more of it, replacing the PC nonsense, leftist propaganda and interpretive "history" with facts and training in logic. Personally, I think showing the Obama speech would be just fine if the context and content were just what the Obama surrogates say it is going to be. Yet many people hold the view that President Obama says one thing and does another. It is therefore a valid concern and worthy of asking the question. School is for education, not the putting forth of one party or anothers political ideology.
Whether George Bush or Barack Obama, it is perfectly acceptable and right for our U.S. President to address America's school kids. But, not as a partisan-laden ideologue.
Kevin in Merrimack's comments demonstrate EXACTLY why parents and school officials are concerned over the fall out of allowing the President to address the student bodies. Kevin's disrespect and loathing of people with diffrering views is hardly a worthy example for school kids to follow...unless the course is "Political Polarization 101"
- Rick Olson, Manchester

Just FYI the teacher's in Manchester were not given the choice to listen in with their classes. This was done by the administration. School administrators were scared off by the hate mongerer's, like a few of the posters here.
- John, Manchester
I agree with Superintendent Hopkins when he said, "We believe that what (Obama is) going to talk about with students -- how important being in school is and working hard -- we think that's appropriate."
I am glad that I don't have children in the school districts that are refusing to provide access to this speech. Schools should be apolitical, and the people that run the district should be educated and intelligent enough to understand the difference between reality and the garbage coming out of talk-radio and Faux New.

THIS is what is wrong with our country, some people seem to be more concerned with THEMSELVES instead of their children and their fellow citizens. This includes the lack of values parents are passing on to their children all the way to the jerks that tailgate and cut people off while driving, it is an attitude of selfishness and disrespect. There is a sense of entitlement without putting in the hard work necessary to achieve success. There is a serious lack of responsibility and accountability in this country.

He has surrounded himself with extremists and the media brushes it off or simply does not report on it. Van Jones is a perfect example and he is forced to resign.
Bravo American citizens!
Van Jones wouldn't pass the security guard on a White House tour yet he is granted a "CZAR" position in the administration?
Why is Obama not filling Cabinet seats?
Why is he filling these seats with "Czar’s?"
I can only imagine the uproar had Bush circumvented the constitution and congress oversight with extremist "Czar’s"
I don’t want government in my Home, in my Dr's office, or in my Childs classroom.
And I don’t need him telling my kids to study and not drop out. That's my job and I do it well.
- Greg L, Hudson, NH
It is the accompanying day of DOE lesson plans, with guided 'talking points' (e.g. 'serve your President' and 'serve your planet' etc) that was to allow significant undocumented biased conversational agendas on young children. Who could be against topic names like Clean Air or Clean Water? But the complexities of those issues economically and globally (Cap & Trade) are far more complex than a 3rd or 5th grader can grasp. If Mao & Hitler preferred this route, there must be a good reason to error towards objecting.
Hey Teacher, leave those kids alone.

I didn't let any of my kids view ANY prez's babblings and my kids are doing the same for their kids.
I can't believe there are people telling others to keep their kids home and view this with them. For what? Our kids are so far behind educationally compared to the world, why would you want your kid to miss school for someone's rant?
It's not that we are "afraid" of anything. The government has stuck their noses in our lives everywhere we go and I draw the line at it coming into schools. It is MY job to keep my child in school and it is MY job to teach them right for wrong- not anybody else.
I find it offensive that just because I have these views, I am heaped in with every nut job out there.
Let's face it, how many of these kids are really going listen anyway? Most will skip it, some will sleep or pass notes or play with their cell phones.
I think parents are angry because they have sign off on every other thing their kid does in school, but the government is allowed to just come in and make the kids view content that may not go along with the parents upbringing of their child.
We are all individuals here and just because someone chooses not to have their child see this, doesn't mean they are a wacko.
I applaud all parents who are refusing to let their kid hear this. It shows they are taking a part in their child's education and ultimately, their futures.
Stop bashing those who don't agree with you- it just shows your stupidity.
Remember- we are all supposed to be tolerant and one people! Haha.
This is not censorship- it is no different than you being opposed to having your child sat down and talked to about a subject you feel is inappropriate.
We should also consider that there are those who don't like the prez, and that is their perrogative. Would you care if someone that you don't like, talked to your child? I would. I wouldn't want them anywhere near my child.
I don't care who it is, governor, movie star, etc. it doesn't belong in the schools.

Across every community in America most of share basic values and have no trouble engaging in conversations in which we can respectfully disagree.

It is also a good opportunity to discuss the censorship of information in the public schools, regardless of your own families personal beliefs. High School students are old enough to learn that history and science is taught differently depending on which part of the country you are educated in. Some places call the civil war the war of northern aggression. Some schools do not teach evolution but they do teach creationism. Teach your children to think for themselves as adults, to hear all sides and decide for themselves what is best for them!

Perhaps, they should all play hookie, find a place to watch the speech, and have an adult-free conversation about the insanity of politics.

In Manchester it is stated by Sup. Brennan "President's speech is being handled under a district policy on outside speakers in the classroom, which allows individual school principals to determine whether the presentation has educational value. Notice is sent to all parents, and if some do not want to have their children participate, the school has to provide a "meaningful alternative."
What notice was sent I have children in two dif schools and no notice.
Also the teacher determine if such a speech is educational or not. I believe it lets teachers or admin for that reason put forth thier own views.
As stated by many opinions let the President speak. What is everyone afraid of.

Its obvious the talking heads , who have no alternatives to our nations problems just false propaganda, really control some of the peoples minds.
I remember watching Presidents speechs in school on TV's, and wasn't Bush addressing school children when he got the call about 911?
This whole idea is nuts, and anti American.

To place the option on the classroom teachers is not what teachers are paid to do.
If controversy results, I can hear the bosses now: WE DIDN'T MAKE THAT DECISION TO HEAR OR NOT HEAR THE SPEECH, THEY DID ( the teachers)!
And it is obvious which of the officials are POLITICAL. Mr Buckley. et al???
If the speech is that important, it will appear ad nausem on every TV channel, where the entire family can hear it together.
Schools are NOT paid for by our taxes to to the arenas of politicians! Although, let's face it, a huge %% of educators are left leaning which is another reason to skip this issue and go on to something essential.

Do we not have enough in our day to day life to worry about without having to waste time and engergy hyperbolizing about a pro-education speech?

I would encourage all of the parents in the district who wish to have their child participate to send their children to school on Tuesday with notes that they wish for their child to be involved.
We live in the "Live Free or Die" State, therefor the parents should be deciding, not administrators who are being pushed based on scare tactics.
Were parents up in arms the morning of September 11th, 2001 when President Bush was reading to school children?
The only people playing politics are those on the right who want to scare us.
Our President is a role model whether you argee with his politics or not, he rose from nothing to being the most powerful man on earth, if he gets one child to take their education seriously and to know their only limits are the ones they place on themselves than it would all be worth while!
