Say you invested $10,000 in an S&P 500 Index fund in January 2000. By March 31, 2024, your investment would have grown to $55,000 at a rate of 7.3% annualized — but, not before dropping to $6,229 by the end of 2002. From March 2000 to October 2002, it was down about 45%.
