The Manchester Monarchs announced Wednesday that they will cease operations, ending the franchise’s 18-year run in the Queen City and leaving both a hockey and entertainment void in the state.

MANCHESTER — The Manchester Monarchs — the professional hockey team that drew thousands of hockey fans to the Queen City and provided a linchpin in the downtown redevelopment of the early 2000s — is hanging up its skates, the team announced Wednesday.

Former Manchester Monarch Zach O’Brien netted a hat trick, leading the Newfoundland Growlers past the visiting Monarchs 5-1 on Monday to clinch the ECHL North Division finals four games to two.

The Manchester Monarchs, playing a home game at The Rinks at Exeter, received a goal from Pierre-Luc Mercier 2:16 into overtime to beat the Newfoundland Growlers 2-1 on Friday night in Game 5 of the ECHL North Division finals.

Former Dartmouth star Zach O'Brien's goal with 1:29 to go in the third period snapped a 2-2 tie and led the Newfoundland Growlers to a 4-2 win over the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday night in Game 2 of their ECHL North Division Finals series at Mile One Centre in Saint John, Newfoundland.
